UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GUSTAVE F. KOLB, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
BACK FORIBRUSHES 0R SlMILAR TOILET ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,611, dated March 24, 1903.
Application filed March 19, 1902. 7 Serial No. 98.935. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE F. KOLB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, lVestchester county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Backs for Brushes or Similar Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a back for brushes, mirrors, and similar toilet articles; and the object is to provide a back that may have difierent patterns upon sets of goods possessing the same general design, so that different pictures from one and the same artist may be reproduced upon sets of goods which are otherwise similar. To accomplish this, Iprovide a frame which may have a general design for different sets and a panel which may be ornamented in any way and fitted into the opening in the frame, so that different sets of similar frames or difierent pieces of a single set maybe differently ornamented.
My invention consists in the manner of securing these panels to the frame, and embodies a novel construction and aggroupment of parts, all as will be more fully described in the following description and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of the frame with the panel omitted; Fig. 2, a side view of the brush complete; Fig. 3, a face view of the panel detached; Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4, Fig. 1, with the panel omitted; Fig. 5, a similar section with the panel in place, and Fig. 6 a detail of the joint between frame andipanel.
The back is composed, essentially, of two parts-21. frame and a panel. Figs. 1 and 4:, is made of annular form and, runs out into the handle a. The annular portion of the frame a,-inclosing the opening a is provided along its inner edge with a downwardly-projecting flange a such flange extending at right angles to the general plane of the back.
The panel I) is of a size and contour to fit against the-flange a of frame 0.. Along its edge it is provided with a shoulder b, that fits against the flange a and with a laterally-extending flange biextending at right The frame a,
angles to flange 0L VlZ., parallel to the general plane of the back. When the panel is fitted to its seat, the flange b will extend beyond flange a and underneath the frame a, Fig. 6, so that a groove or channel is formed between the flanges a 12 The flange b is shorter than the width of the frame a, Fig. 5, so that an opening is formed between the outer edge of the flange b and the inner side of the frame a. In this way the groove over the flange b is open laterally and may be filled in with solder c, which is introduced around the edge of the flange. The groove when thus filled securely connects the panel I) to the back a, the solder flowing also between the flange a and the shoulder b to form a tight joint.
The frames aare struck up in suitable dies, while the panels b may be embossed, enameled, etched, engraved, or ornamented in other suitable manner. 1
By my invention 1. may provide the frames at with any one of a number of panels I), so
that difierent sets of similar frames or the different pieces of a single set may be difierently ornamented. Thus I am enabled to obtain a large assortment in an expensive line of goods without increasing to an appreciable extent the cost of such goods.
The head of the'brush d when fitted into the frame a and secured to the outer edge thereof covers the soldered joint between frame and panel and conceals the connection entirely from View.
What I claim is A back for a toilet-brush composed of a frame having an inner flanged edge, a panel having a marginal flange engaging and projecting beyond the flange on the frame to form a laterally-opening groove accessible from the back side of the frame, and cementing materialrfilledin said groove to secure GUSTAYE F. KOLB.
Witnesses: WILLIAM ScHULz, F. v. BRIESEN.
