NIT'ED' STATES FRANK G. NEUMANN, OF IATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
ARTICLE-LIFTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,296, dated March 24, 1903.
' Application filed September 11 1902. Serial No. 122,977. (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK G. NEUMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Article-Lifting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompariying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices designed for reaching down from shelves or out of show-windows, &c., articles which may be displayed there.
tween them and having its free ends set into The invention will be found fullyillustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein corresponding letters of reference indicate like parts, and wherein-- Figure lis a top plan view of the device, a part of a certain away to show the inclosed mechanism. Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation, and Fig. 4 is a View of a modified form of a detail of the invention.
a in said drawings designates a hollow pole or staff, onto one end of which is fitted a cap or ferrule b, preferably forming an integral portion of a plate 0. Viewed in elevation the plateissubstantiallywedge-shaped andforms, with a similarly-shaped shell d, acasing which is closed on all sides but one, as at e. The shell is preferably secured with the bottom edges of its side walls bearing against the upper edge portion of the plate 0 by means of screws f, disposed one atthe back and one at the front. On therear" screw as a pivot-are fnlcrumed the rear. ends of a pair of clips g, having their adjacent faces in their free portions provided, preferably, with rubber pads 71. The clips are normally pressed outwardly by means of a coiled springz', disposed berecesses j, formed in the clips.
k designates posts in which are journaled pulleys Z. It should be remarked that these posts incidentally afford support for the middle portion of the top wall of the shell d at the front. It should also be remarked that casing thereof being broken what I claim as new,
they are disposed one on each side of an opening m in the plate 0, which communicates with the bore n of the poleor staff, and that over them extend cords, wires, or other form of flexible connections n, which are secured to the clips at their upper ends and pass down into the bore '21 of the pole, where they are preferably secured to the upper end of a wire or rod 0.
p is a triangular casing which is set in a similarly-formed recess q, formed in'the pole or staff a. In this casing is fulcrumed an operating-lever 7", which protrudes from the casing 12 and is pivotally connected with the rod 0. The handle or thumb-piece s of the lever is preferably turned into a plane slightly oblique with reference to that of the lever, so that in pressing upon it, as intended, by the thumb it may be more conveniently operated.
According to the device as shown in the first three figures it is designed especially for lifting round objects-such as bottles, cans, and the like-the clips Qjbeing formed with opposed depressions or outward bonds for this purpose; but if the device is to be used more particularly in lifting articles having flat parallel sides, such as boxes, the clips may be made straight, as shown in Fig. 4. In fact, so far as the grasping portions of the clips are concerned they may extend variously, according to the particular purpose for which the device is principally used.
. Having thus fully described my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination of a hollow pole or staff, a suitable support secured on said pole or stalf, cooperating clips arranged on said support, a casing penetrating and secured in "said pole or'stafi, an operating element disposed insaid casing and having a fulcrum therein on one side of the pole and its operating end at the other side of said pole, and operative connecting means between the clips and said operating element, said connecting means extending through said pole or staff,
substantially as described.
2. The combination of a pole or staff, a plate secured on one end of said pole or staff, a shell removably' secured to said plate and forming therewith a casing, codperating clips arranged in said casing, actuating means for vices connecting said clips and the actuating In testimony that Ielaim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of September, 1902.
FRANK G. NEUMANN.
said clips disposed in said staff, flexible demeans and extending longitudinally through said staff, and guiding means for said flexible devices projecting from said plate and acting Witnesses: as auxiliary supports for the shell, substan- 1 JOHN W. STEWARD, tially as described. JAMES B. NEWTON.
