CLEANING AND SCRUBBING APPLIANG. APPLICATION PIL@ 00122, 1902.
,Bo MODEL.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCEo GEORGE BRUHN, OF WINONA, MINNESOTA.
`OLEANING AND SCRUBBING APPLIANCE.
j SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,223, dated March 17, 1903.
Application filed October 2, 1902. Serialllo. 125,717. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be itknown that I, GEORGE BRUHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Cleaning and Scrubbing Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cleaning and scrubbing appliances, and has for its object the provision of a device s uitable for a mophandle or for grasping the back of a scrubbing-brush and which may also be employed as a carpet-stretcher.
With this object in view the invention consists-in the novel construction and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
j Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention in application as a carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same in use as a brush-holder, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the jaws of the device in open position.
In the drawings the numeral l designates the handle, in one end of which is driven the shank of the jaw 2, longitudinally alined `'therewith and having its free end portion broadened and provided with the inturned row of teeth 2a and spaced therefrom with the inwardly-projecting rib 2b. Intermediately pivoted to the jaw 2 is the twin jaw 3, likewise having inturned teeth 3a and rib 3b, as previously described, and forming with jaw 2 a pair of tong-like jaws. end portion of jaw 3 is attached the coilspring 4, connecting the same with the inter-- mediate portion of operating-lever 6, pivoted at its inner end to the handle at 5 and arranged to be swung backwardly toward the handle and passed over and intol engagelment with hook or catch 7 to close the jaws 2 and 3 and hold them closed and the spring 4 under tension.
To the free Arigid jaw 2 are engaged with the flooring with the handle inclined upwardly toward the person of the operator and the jaws at the limit of their separation. Thus u pon movement of the operating-lever the teeth of jaw 3 will be engaged with the carpet, which upon further movement of said lever will be drawn with said jaw 3 toward jaw 2 in the desired direction for stretching.
The pivotal connection of the operating-lever with the handle can be adjusted to suit the length of the coil-spring, so that it will always eect a secure grip of the jaws.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a device of the class described, the handle carrying the rigid jaw in substantial alinement therewith at one end portion thereof, the movable jaw intermediately pivoted to said rigid jaw, a row of inturned teeth at the outer end of each said jaw, an inwardly-projecting rib upon each said jaw, and spaced from said row of teeth to include therebetween a recess or seat to receive the back of a brush, the operating-lever pivoted at one end portion thereof, intermediately to said handle, the coil-spring connecting said movable jaw and operating-lever, and a catch-
