PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT K. REED, OF WINSTED, CONNECTICUT.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,023, dated March 17, 1903. Application filed December 2, 1902. Serial No. 133,621. N m lerwise. I accomplish this result byimproved means which permit the toy to be constructed in an improved form, both operatively and apparently, thus adding to the gratification and amusement of the exhibition and of those who witness the exhibition;
My invention will be found fully described hereinafter and also illustrated in the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with the manikin in an assumed position, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof with the manikin at rest.
Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an acrobat or manikin which has flexibly-jointed limbs and is suspended upon a flexible fila ment 2, which passes through the manikins hands 1 l and is tensioned by attaching it to two uprights 3 3, which are slightly flexed toward each other for that purpose. Each upright 3 is perforated in two places, as at 2'2, and each hand is correspondingly perforated, as at 1"1, and the filament is passed through all of said perforations in such a sequence of the latter that further flexure of the uprights 3, produced by pressure exerted between and against them near their bases, will effect a tension of the filament 2 and cause the manikin' to gyrate or oscillate about the filament and to assume various acrobatic positions and grotesque attitudes. Suitable pressure hetween and against the uprights 3 is applied,
as before mentioned, by means of a toggle- ;joint 4, which is formed of the members 4 4, which are severally hinged at one end to an upright 3 and at the other end to each other. The toggle-joint 4 thus formed is operated by means of a lever 5, which is fulcrumed at one end to the toggle-joint at and at or near the middle ofits length on a fulcrum 6. The latter and lower end of each upright 3 are rigidly secured to a base 7.
The operation of my invention is simple and readily understood. Pressure in varying degrees applied to the free end of the le- .ver 5 causes the manikin to gyrate, as aforerangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A toy of the class described, comprising a figure of suitable design, a filament upon which said figure is suspended, uprights to each of which said filament is attached, a toggle-joint arranged to apply pressure between and against the uprights and a lever arranged to operate the toggle-joint.
2. A toy of the class described, comprising a figure of suitable design, a filament: upon which said figure is suspended, uprights to each of which said filament is attached, a toggle joint arranged to apply pressure between and against the uprights and means for operating the toggle-joint. I
In testimony whereof ,I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
