DEVICE FOR THROWING MOTORS INTO GEAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 722,122, dated March 3, 1903.
Application filed May 15, 1902. Serial No- 107A45. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDWIG MAURER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a residentof Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Throwing Motors Into and Out of Gear, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a device for throwing into gear the driving mechanism of motor-cars,which mechanism is constituted by a friction-wheel gear. This improved arrangement, by means of which the device for throwing into gear is specially adapted for the purpose for which it is used, consists in the motor-shaft on one end of which the friction-disk is fixed being mounted so as to be capable of being displaced and being engaged at the other end by the lever for throwing into gear, by means of which the motorshaft is displaced axially, and thereby the friction disk pressed against the frictionwheel revolubly mounted in front of it.
The improved arrangement for throwing into gear is shown in one form of construction in the accompanying drawing, in which said figure represents a plan view partly in section.
A crank-shaft Z) is revolubly and, within certain limits, adjustably mounted in the motor-casing ct. On one end of the crank-shaft a friction-disk cis fixed, which stands closely opposite an adjustable friction wheel d, mounted on a revoluble shaft 7c. At the other a suitable slot in the lever e.
ment-lever e is pivotally mounted at one end on the car-frame h and at the other end is connected by means of a suitable link-bar t' with a handle arranged in proximity to the drivers seat in such a way that by pulling the handle the lever e is moved to the right from its position shown in the drawing, and thereby the motor-shaft Z) is axially displaced. Consequently'the friction-disk 0 comes in contact with the friction-wheel d and when the lever e is firmly pulled is pressed against the said wheel, so that the rotation imparted to it by the motor is transmitted to the revoluble axle 7c of the friction-wheel, and thus to the rear-wheel axle of the motor-car. On the 5 5 rod e being released the pressure on the friction-surfaces ceases, and the driving connection between the motor and the rear-wheel axle is interrupted.
I declare that what I claim is In a device for throwing motor-shafts into and out of gear in motor-vehicles and the like, the combination with suitable supportingbearings, of a motor shaft journaled therein, having an elongated crank portion and having limited endwise movement, a pitman connected to said crank to have sliding movement thereon, a friction-disk carried on the end of said shaft, a lever for moving said shaft longitudinally, and a friction-wheel adjacent to said friction-disk and adapted to be engaged and disengaged by the movement of the shaft and disk, substantiallyas described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
LUDWIG MAURER.
Witnesses ANDREAS STICH, OSCAR BOOK.
