Be itknown that I, FRANK A. HUNTINGTON, of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Spring for Beds and Furniture',` and I do hereby declare the following description and aecompanyingd-rawings are suiiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it mest nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.

The object of my invcntion is to provide a cheap, durable, andeasy spring for beds, chairs, sofas, lounges, and other articles offurniture, and consists in attaching to the cross-bar or boards et' beds or furniture,between the openings, standards ot'wood or other material, having a cap or pad upon the top; afband or bandsof India rubber being fastened to the lower end of the standard, attached to each side of the cross-bars hy staples, so that when a weight is placed upon the bed `or springs these-standards are pressed down between the openings, and when the weight isremoved they regain their original position, with the end projecting a little below the cross-bars or boards. I

A represents the standard or spring-post, having a cap orbutton, a, at its upper end;v This standard may be constructed of wood or metal; if of wood, it canbe readilyr turned in a commonv lathe with the cap 'on the l top, or the cap can be made of leather, or stiff paper, or pasteboard, and be nailed vor confined to the topof the standards. In-the lower end of, the postor standard I attach a single or douhleband or strip, B, of .India rubber or other elastic material, conning it midway by a nail, screw, staple, or other means, and each end so remaining forms loops which are attached .by staples to each side of .the cross-bars C of the frame. These springs are placed between the opening lin the cross-bars, a suitable rdistance apart,eac'h spring being independently connected'to the cross-bars, .so thzit if the elastic band should break or become loose, the spring so affected can be repaired -without taking the bed to pieces or removing any other spring y The top of the springs may be covered with canvas or stripsiof webbing placed lengthwise and transversely, so as to cover each top or cap ofthe springs, ,and is fastened tothe frame, each cap being confined to the canvas or webbing by a screw, nail, or staple. By this means a very-cheap and desirable spring is obtained, and is not liable te get ont of repair and wear holes through the canvasor eovering'which holds it, as in case where spiral springs 'arcfnse'h Having thus described my invcntiom'what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
