R. H. JACKSON. AUXILIARY IRONING BOARD.

- IN VE N TOR B Y Y A HORNE-Vs.-
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OEErCE;
RALPH II. JACKSON, OF ROCHESTER, NE'YV YORK.
AUXILIARY iRONlNG-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,926, dated February 17, 1903.
Application filed May 2, 1902. Serial No. 105,629. (No model-3 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH H. JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Auxiliary Ironing-Board, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved auxiliary ironing-board which is simple and durable in construction, arranged for convenient attachment to an ordinary ironing-board or other device to allow of ironing shirt-sleeves, shirt-waists, skirts and the like, and to permit; of swinging the auxiliary ironing-board into an inactive position to leave the main ironing-board onobstructed for its legitimate use.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in theclaims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improvement as applied to an ordinary main ironing-board. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of the same; and Fig. 4. is an enlarged transverse section of'the same on the line 4 i of Fig. 2.
A screw-clamp A of suitable construction is adapted to be fastened to one end of the main ironing-board B, and the said clamp A is provided on its top with an upwardly-extending integral web A, engaged by a pivot 0, held on depending lugs D, formed on a bracket D, screwed or otherwise secured to one end of an auxiliary ironingboard E, adapted to extend over the main ironingboard B and approximately parallel thereto to allow of using the auxiliary ironing-board for ironing shirt-sleeves, skirts, and the like.
The bracket D is extended forwardly from the lugs D and is provided on, the under side of its forward extension with a rest Diadapted to be seated on the forward end of a flange A formed on the upper end of the web A, so that when the auxiliary ironing-board E used.
swinging movement. desired to use the auxiliary ironing-board for 'A so as to hold the bracket and the auxiliary ironing-board E againsttransverse movement, thus relieving the pivot G of undue strain'when the auxiliary ironing-board E is The rearward extension D of the bracket D is adapted to rest against a rib A formed on the rear portion of the clamp A, the said rearward extension D engaging the said rib at the time the auxiliary ironing-board E is swung into an upright position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. It will be seen that the rib A and the rearward extension D and pivot C are so located relative one to the other that when the auxiliary ironing-board E is swung into this upright position it is slightly inclined rearwardly somewhat beyond a vertical position to hold the auxiliary ironing-board against accidental downward Thus when it is not the purpose mentioned it can be swung into this upright position, so as to leave the main ironing-board unobstructed to permit its use for its legitimate purposes; By unscrewing the screw 0f the clamp'A the entire device can be removed from the ironing-board B whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An auxiliary ironing-board for use on main ironing-boards, comprising a clamp for removable attachment to the main ironingboard, said clamp being provided with an upwardlyextending elongated projection, a board, and a bracket secured to-the under face of the board and provided with lugs pivoted to the projection of the clampand forward of said lugs with a rest having side members and adapted to be seated on the said projection of the clamp with the side members projecting down on opposite sides thereof, as set forth.
2. An auxiliary ironing-hoard for use on main ironing-boards, comprising a clamp for removable attachment to the main ironingboard and provided with a Web extending upward from the clamp and terminating in a flange at the top, an auxiliary board, and a bracket secured to the under side thereof and having depending lugs pivoted on the said web, the bracket having a forward extension provided with a rest having side flanges and adapted to be seated on the forward portion of the flange of the said web, the bracket also having a rearward extension adapted to engage the rear portion of the web, as set forth.
3. An auxiliary ironing-board for use on main ironing-boards, comprising a clamp for removable attachment to the main ironingboard and provided with a web extending upward from the clamp and terminating in a flange at the top and in arib at the rear, an auxiliary board, a bracket secured to the under side thereof and having depending lugs pivoted on the said web, the bracket having a forward extension provided with a rest adapted to be seated on the said flange, the bracket also having a rearward extension adapted to be seated on the said rib, and guide-flanges on the said rest, to straddle the flange of the web, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RALPH I-I. JACKSON.
