Description

is a specification.
object to provide a simple and efficient filling UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIM J. STEVENSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FILLING FOR MATTRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 720,292, dated February 10, 19 03.
Application filed December 14, 1901.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, SIM J. STEVENSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fillings for Mattresses and the Like, of which the following The presentinven tion relates to the fibrous elastic type of fillings for mattresses, pillows, and like household articles, andv has for its for such uses in which are combined the features of cleanliness, lightness, cheapness, and ability to retain its elasticity duringlong-continned use.
To such end the present improvement consists in imparting to hemp or other like vegetable fiber a spirally-coiled form which has been found from an extended practical use to afford a filling for mattresses and the like possessing great elasticity and lightness, which elasticity is maintained during longcontinued use, so that the filling is not liable to lump up in the manner common to the ordinary fibrous fillings heretofore employed in the present art.
In the practical carrying out of the present invention rope out to suitable lengths is unraveled by any suitable mechanism into a loose mass, which I have found to be of es- Serial No. 85,988. (No specimens.)
pecial value as a filling for mattresses, pillows, and the like in that the spirally-coiled form imparted to the fibers composing the rope affords a very elastic nature to the unraveled mass of such fibers.
Any of the ordinary hempen ropes of commerce may be used to produce the present filling, preference being given to rope formed from sisal hemp. I have found that old rope affords a very superior filling in that the fibers thereof have a more permanent spiral form than they would have in a filling formed from newly-laid rope. Such old rope has also the advantage of cheapness in price, which more than compensates for the cost of cleaning the same for foreign impurities, such as oil, dirt, &c.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A filler for mattresses and the like, consisting of loose or unraveled fibers of hemp rope said fibers having a spirally-coiled form, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 12th day of December, 1901.
SIM J. STEVENSON.
