Be it known that I, FRANcIs DEGEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Forming Hat-Bodies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use th e,

This invention consists in the arrangement of a cap fitting on the perforated cone on which the hat-bodyis formed, in such a manner that when the cap is in position, the lower portion of the cone can be covered with iine stock, and after the cap has been removed, common stock can be applied over the entire cone aud-then again fine stock, and a hat-body can be produced partly of common and partly of line stock, having the fine stock on the outside surface of the body as well as at the under brim of the hat. The discharge of the stock from the trunk is regulated by a slide which can be so adjusted that it covers the upper portion of the trunk, and allows the stock to discharge directly upon the lower portion of the cone, which is not covered by the cap.

A represents the perforated cone; of a machine for forming hat-bodies. With this machine I have combined a' cap, B, which covers up its upper part, and which may be made to extend down to within-a. greater or smaller distance of the base of the cone, according to the nature of the work to be accomplished. Gaps of different size or height may be provided, so that they can be readily changed for different sorts of hats. The fur or hair generally called stock, from which the hat-bodies are to be made, is blown on the cone A. through the trunk G, and this trunk is provided with a slide, D, by means of which the discharge-opening of said. trunk can be closed more or less, as may be desired. By using the cap B on the coneA, I am enabled to produce on the machine, hat-bodies composed partiallyof tine and partially of common stock, the common stock being on the inside and the ine stock on the outside of the body. The cap is required in forming the under brim of the hat. The inner or under surface of this brim must show tine stock, or else a hat composed partly of ineand partly of common stock would not be saleable. It is therefore necessary to apply to the cone A, first, a belt of fine stock equal in width to the width of the brim to be formed. But if it is attempted to blow fine stock on the cone without using the cap B, saidstockspreads over the entire surface of the cone, even if the dischargeopening of the trunk is closed up nearly down to its bottom end, and the object desired is not attained. But by applying the cap B, only so much of the surface of the cone is left uncovered as is required to produce the brim of the hat, and the line stock can now be blown on the cone without ditiiculty. During this process the sldfefD is applied to the trunk, so as Yto cover the discharge-opening to a level with the bottom edge ot' the cap, and after a suicient quantity of ne stock has been applied, the cap and slide are removed, and a quantity of common stock is applied over the entire cone, and finally a quantity of fine stock is applied to form the external surface of the hat-body.

In this manner I am enabled to produce, by machinery, a hat-body composed partly of common and partly of ne stock, and in doing so, the under brim of the 4hat as well as the rest of the hat-body is finished on the machine. p i

I am aware that hat-bodies have been made of common stock inside and ne stock on the outside, but such bodies have either been made entirely by hand, or at least the under brim has been nished by hand. V

I do not claim as by invention a hat-body made partly-of common and partly of iiue stock but What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hat-body formed partly of common 'and partly of nestock, by iirst blowing on the cone a belt of ne stock, then over the whole cone a quantity of common stock, and nally a quantity of ne stock, substantially as set forth. Y

2. The close-fitting cap B, in combination with the perforated cone A, of a machinefor forming hat-bodies, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The slide D, in combination with the trunk C, cap B, and perforated cone A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
