SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,788, dated January 6, 1903. Application filed August 14, 1902. Serial No. 119,601. (No model.)
souri, and VICTOR R. lVILLOUGHBY, residing at the city ofSt. Oharles, county of St. Charles, State of Missourhcitizens of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dumping-Oars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,
such as will enable-others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is an end View, partly in section,
of a car-body, showing our improved door locking devices applied in position thereon.
Fig. 2 is a top view of a portion of a car provided with our improved locking devices.
Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of a car pro vided with our improved locking devices.
Fig. 4 is a detailvertical sectional view of the locking-jaw and associate parts. Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view of the locking-shaft,showz 5 ing one of the locking-jaws in position there on. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view through thelocking-jaw. Fig. 7 is a plan View looking in the direction of the arrow 7 in Figs.
5 and 6. Fig. 8 is a top plan View, and Fig. 9 is an elevational view looking in the direction of the arrow 9 in Figs. 5 and 6.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in dumping-cars of that type in which the load is discharged at the sides of the car, the object being to provide a simple and efticient means for locking the outwardlymovable sides or doors of the car in a closed position, said locking means being operable from the end of the car.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts, all as will hereinafter be described and afterward pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the end wall,
and 2 the oppositely-inclined bottom, of a car. 3 indicates top rails, which, as usual, are preferably supported at appropriate points by side stakes or posts. (Not shown.)
a indicates the outwardly-movable sides r doors of the car, the same being supported in position by hinge members 5, secured thereto, which cooperate with brackets 6 on the rails 3. The hinge meinbero consists, preferably, of a T-iron suitably attached by its lateral flanges for the greater part of its length to the door 4, the lateral flanges at the top of the door being bent up and welded to the web to form a hinge-eye 7 of increased thickness and strength. At the bottom of the door the strap member 5 is bent or inclined outwardly at an angle, (see Fig. 4,) the Web being preferabl-y removed at the lower extremity 8 and provided with a rubbing-knob 9 for cooperating with a locking-jaw 10. The outer edges of the inclined floorof the car are preferably cut away at these points, as at 2, to accomdate the lower projecting ends of these strap members.
Arranged in suitable lugs or brackets secured to the side sill of the car under the. projecting edges of the floor 2 and extending longitudinally the car, preferably from end to end, is a rod 11, the same being formed non-circular at intervals for the attachment of locking-jaws 10. The locking-jaw 10 is preferably made up of two sections, the section a being reinforced by outwardly-extending flanges b at its side edges and having a half-socket 0 opening rearwardly for receiv- 8o ing a portion of the non-circular portion of rod 11. A recess d is provided in the overhanging portion of this half-socket, and on each side of said recess are lugs or ears (2. The other section f of this locking-jaw is formed with a T-head g, which cooperates with the lugs e, the shan k'of said T-head being preferably received in the recess d. This section f provides a half-socket, which registers with the half-socket of the sections and completes the seat for the non-circular portion of the rod 1-1. The section f is extended,
as at h, and provided with an opening, through and 15, whose other ends are connected to arms 16, fitted in sockets 17, arranged on the ends of the longitudinally-extending rod 11.
The handle portion of lever 13 is preferably arranged in a guideway 18, suitable means, such as a locking-block 19, being provided for holding the lever in locked position.
The operation of the device is simple. When the lever 13 is moved, the doors being in locked position, the links 14 and 15 and arms 16 are also moved and the rod 11 rocked. The locking-jaws, being firmly clamped to the rod 11, are swung outwardly and downwardly away from the rubbing-knobs on the lower ends of the door-hinge straps and the doors released. To lock the doors after the discharge of the load, the handle is returned to its home position to engage the locking-jaws with the rubbing-knobs.
It is obvious that the means for simultaneously locking and releasing the doors can be dispensed with, whereby the operator can lock or release the doors on either side of the car at will. This individual operation may under certain conditions be advantageous.
We are aware that minor changes in the construction. arrangement, and combination of the several parts of our locking device may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described withoutin the least departing from the nature and principle of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In adevice of the characterindicated, the combination with an operating-rod having a non-circular portion, of a locking-jaw with extension having non-circular seat fitted thereon, and a removable section forming a part of said locking-j aw which completes the seat for the operating-rod; substantially as described.
2. In a device of the characterindicated, the combination with an operating-rod provided with non-circular portions, of locking-jaws formed with half-sockets for receiving said non-circular portions, and removable sections secured to said locking-jaws and provided with half-sockets for completing the seats for the non-circular portions of the operating-rod; substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character indicated, the combination with an operating-rod, of a locking-jaw having a half-socket for accommodatin g said rod and provided with lugs, a removable section provided with a T-head for cooperating with said 1ugs,and means for clamping said removable section in position; substantially as described.
4:. In a device of the character indicated, the combination with a non-circular operatingrod,of a lockin g-j aw formed with a half-socket for receiving said rod, said locking-jaw being also provided with a recess d and lugs e, and a removable section having a T-head for cooperating with said lugs c, said removable section being formed with a half-socket for cooperating with said rod, and means for securing said removable section to the lockingjaw; substantially as described.
5. In a side-dump car, the combination with the door, of a T-shaped strap whose securingflanges are bent up and welded to the medial flange to form a hinge-eye of increased thickness and strength; substantially as described.
6. In a side-dump car, the combination with the door, of a T-shaped strap secured thereto and whose lower end projects downwardly and outwardly beyond the lower edge of the door, and a rockable locking-jaw cooperating with said projecting end; substantially as described.
7. In a side-dump car, the combination with the door, of a strap extending downwardly and outwardly beyond the lower edge of the door, a rubbing-knob on the lower extremity of said strap, a shaft having non-circular portion, and a rockable locking-jaw secured on said noncircular portion cooperating with said rubbing-knob; substantially as described.
8. In a side-dump car, the combination with the door, of a T-shaped strap whose flanges are bent upwardly and welded to the medial web to form a hinge-eye, the lower end of said strap projecting downwardly and outwardly beyond the lower edge of the door and provided with a rubbing-knob at its extremity, and a locking-jaw cooperating with said rubbing-knob; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
