Description
2 W O R M v SNUFF 0R TOBAGGO BOX.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 18, 1902.
HQ MODEL.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. ROWE, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
SNUFF R TOBACCO BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,717, dated January 6,
Application filed March 18, 1902. I Serial No. 98,839. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK M, ROWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snuff orsTobacco Boxes, of which the following is a specification. ,s
The object of this invention is to construct a snnif or tobacco boxhaving a partition separating the cover-operating mechanism from the main portion of the box and of the special arrangement for opening the cover.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is top view of the box in which the cover is closed. Fig. 2 is a top view of the box in which the cover is open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the box in which the cover is closed. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the box in which the cover is open. Fig. 5 is a lengthwise section.
The box proper, 1, has rounded edges and ends and has an opening 2 in one face. A partition 3 is located near one end and held in place by a screw connecting the bottom of the box with the lug 4, extending from the partition. On the face of the partition, next the end of the box, is supported a slide 5 bya screw 6, located in the lengthwise slot 7 and connected to the partition. One end of this slide has a hooked portion 8 and the other end has a rounded section 9. The rounded section 9 of the slide is located in an opening 10 in one edge of the box.
A cover 11 has a hinge connection with the box along one side of the opening 2.
An arm 12 extends from the cover and is located in the end of the box, separated from the main portion of the box by the partition 3. A coiled spring 13 connects the free end of the arm 12, and an car 14 extends from the slide 5 near its hookedend. The cover 11 has a recess 15 in its free edge at the end thereof near the partition 3.
Then the cover is closed, the parts will appear as shown at Figs. 1, 3, and 5. The cover will be held closed by the spring holding the hook of the slide in the recess 15 in the cover.
By pressing in the slide 5 the hook will be made free of the cover and the spring will throw the'cover up, when the parts will appear as shownat Figs. 2 and i.
In closing the cover the hook will snap into the recess. By this arrangement a single spring serves to move the slide and throw the cover open. I
In locating the partition near the end the mechanical parts are separated from that portion of the box holding the snnfi or tobacco, so that the operative parts are not interfered with. r
I claim as my invention- 1. In a snuff or tobacco box, the combine. tion of the main portion of the box, a hinged cover therefor, a sliding catch for the cover, anarm extending from the cover, a spring forming a connection between the catch and arm and a partition separating the catch from the main portion of the box.
2. In a snuff or tobacco box, the combination of the main portion of the box, a hinged cover therefor, a catch provided witha slot, a pin located in the slot, and a spiral spring forming a connection between the catch and cover.
3; In a snufi or tobacco box, the combination of the main portion of the box, a hinged cover therefor, a sliding catch for the cover, an arm extending from the cover and a spring forming a connection between the catch and arm.
4:. In a snnfi or tobacco box, the combination of the main portion of the box, a hinged cover therefor, a catch for the cover and a spiral spring having one end connected to the catch and the other end to the cover.
FRANK M. ROWE.
