Be it known that 1, JOHN B. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of The city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbers Shears, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to enable the barber to use his shears and at the same time two combs. Any one familiar with the cutting of hair is aware thatthe barber frequently employs the blades of his shears to assist in raising and manipulating the hair; that after thus raising the hair he holds it up with a comb and then clips it; that during theoperation of hair-cutting the barber would find it to be a great convenience to be able to use two combs, one as heretofore and one instead of the blades of the shears.

The primary object of my invention is to supply this felt want.

The several features of my invention and the various advantages resulting from their use, conjointly or otherwise, will be apparent from the following description and claims.

In the accompanying drawing, making a part of this application, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, the figure is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention-to wit, a combination of a shears and combs.

I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail.

A indicates one blade, and B the handle of this blade, of a barbers shears. 0 indicates the other blade, and D the handle of this second blade. These blades are pivoted together at G by the customary pivot.

The handle B not only has the customary rear finger-hold B for the third finger, but also the customary opening 13 for the second finger.

B indicates an additional opening for the first finger, because when a straight comb is located on the outside of the handle the finger cannot be placed on the outside of the handle, as is customaryin the use of the ordinary shears. The handle D hasthe customary single opening'D for the thumb.

I combine with the handle D a comb E, and I preferably make this, as shown, to extend the length of the handle. I provide the handle B with a comb F. In each instance the teeth of the comb extend outwardly from the handle, substantially as shown.

The preferred material of which the combs are made and their mode of union with the shears is as follows: Each comb is of steel or some material of which shears are made and preferably in one piece with the handle to which it belongs, the union being at the outer edge of the handles; but the comb may extend partly or altogether along the back of the blade, as indicated in dotted lines H H in the figure, as well as along the handles, or when so extended be omitted in part or in whole from the handles, or may be confined to one blade only. When extended along the blades, it may be united thereto.

My invention will greatly facilitate the cutting of hair in connection with the ordinary comb held with the left hand.

In so far as my deviceis useful in other descriptions 0f shears it is claimed for the same, and the term barbers shears as used in the claims is to be understood as covering such various kinds of shears.

What I claim as new' and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a barbers shears, the combination of the blade, the handle, and a comb connected to the handle, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. In a barbers shears, the combination of the blade, the handle, and a comb connected to the handle and extending along the blade, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In a barbers shears, the combination of the comb, the blade and the handle, all in one piece, the comb attached to the outer edge of the handle, and in plane therewith, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

4. In a barbers shears, the combination of the blade, and the handle, the blade as well as the handle provided with a comb, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

5. In a barbers shears, the combination of outer edge thereof, and in the plane in which the combs and the blades and the handles, the blades operate, substantially as and for 10 each blade and handle provided with a comb, the purposes specified.
