ARNO DRECHSLER, OF ZEIOI-IA, GERMANY.
HAY RACK OR WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,037, dated December 2, 1902. Application filed September 5, 1902. Serial No. 122,265. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNO DRECHSLER, a subject of the King of Saxony, and a resident of Zeicha, post Naumdorf, near Oschatz, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay Racks or Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
In harvesting it is desirable that each wagon should carry as great a quantity as possible of corn or hay. This, however, can only be attained in a restricted measure, because the loading over the racks of harvest-wagons or the side walls of baggage-wagons finds no sufficient support and can only be secured at a moderate height by a longitudinal beam laid lengthwise thereon and drawn tight by ropes.
Now the object of the present invention is to provide a device by which the loading capacity in such wagons can be very considerably increased, such device being at the same time light and easy to handle. This new device is applicable to harvest-wagons, baggagewagons, and to other similar wagons.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings by way of example as applied to a harvest-wagon.-
Figure 1 is a plan of a wagon-rack, showing the new arrangement on one side. Fig. 2 shows the device as seen in the longitudinal direction of the wagon.
The harvest-wagon illustrated in Fig. 1
shows the familiar racks as side walls. In these racks according to the invention there are placed at determined intervals two iron steps 1, provided with collars 2, which lie on the under beam of the rack, and which steps are connected by struts 3. On the upper beam 4 an iron sleeve 5 is secured over the iron steps 1 by screws or such like. The sleeve 5 has eye 6 in front, so that two arms 8, also provided with eyes, can be jointed thereto by the help of a through stay-bolt 7. The two levers carry with the help of a link the plate 9, which is bent underneath and is fitted in front with two armslO, through holes in which the upper ends of supports 11 are inserted. These supports 11 enter with their lower ends into holes in the iron steps 1 and are secured at both top and bottom by pins. Each plate 9 has a hole in about the middle of its bent beam 12. These auxiliary beams or rods 12,
which widen the wagon in the manner as may be seen from Fig. 1, are laid in the bent plates 9, the curvature of which fits to a certain extent the diameter of the rods 12. The fastening is effected by spring-pawls 13, which are secured to the rods 12 in any desired manner. A suitable way of fitting these springpawls is by means of a spring-hook 14, which is forced by simple pressure through the opening in the plate 9 and catches therein, so that the rod is secured.
The device is assembled in the following manner: The steps 1 and the sleeve 5 are permanently secured on the wagon-racks. By the aid of the through stay-bolt 7 the arms 8 are secured with the plate 9 to the sleeve 5. The supports 11 are then laid in the steps 1 and secured by a pin. After the securingis effected the upper ends of the supports 11 are passed through the holes in the arm 10 of the plates 9 and likewise fastened by a pin. Then the auxiliary beam 12 is laid in the curved parts of the plates 9 and pressed down, so
that the spring-pawls 13 spring into the holes I of the plates and secure the bar. To dismount the arrangement, the procedure is reversed.
The iron steps 1 and the arms 10 of the plates 9 have several holes for the purpose of enabling the auxiliary beam to be set at any desired height, according to the desired breadth of load. The rods 12 can be divided in order to make them more handy. The middle plate 9 must then have two holes or four or more plates must be arranged.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- The combination with the two side bars of a harvest or like wagon, of the bars 1 extending between the same, the arms 8 pivotally connected to the upper bar, plates 9 pivotally connected to the outer ends of the arms, and having curved portions, a bar 12 seated in said curved portions, and adjustable supports 11 interposed between the outer ends of said plates 9 and the bars 1, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ARNO DRECIISLER. tVitnesses:
