DOTTING-PEN FOR DRAWING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 715,007, dated December 2, 1902. Application filed April 15, 1902. Serial No. 102,991. (No model.)

To all whom it' may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHANN BossART- BCHLI, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Suhr-Aarau, canton of Aargau, Switzerland, (whose post-office address is Drawing Instrument `Works, Suhr-Aarau, aforesaid,) haveinveuted new and useful Improvementsin Dotting-Pensfor Drawing, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Switzerland, dated March 2l, 1902, No. 29,019, and in Germany, dated March 29, 1902,) of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in dotting-pens for drawing, and has for its object to provide means whereby when it is desired to change the character of the dots, the necessity7 of exchanging the dotting-wheel is dispensed with, thus saving a great deal of time and whereby any ruler or curve may be used. My improved dotting-pen may also be used as an ordinary drawing-pen, and whenA worn the pen itself can be exchanged. I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is aside View; Fig. 2, a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a plan in section at line A B.

Referring to annexed drawings, a is the handle, which at its lower end has a thin extension b, rounded off at its lower extremity and formed with holes adapted to receive the screw c and stud d, respectively. This extension has also an arm e, Figs. l and 3. Upon the screw c a spur-wheelf is mounted capable of rotating, and upon the stud d a spurwheel g in gear with the spur-wheelf. The spurwheel g has on its side two pins and t, adapted to receive a number of disks e, placed upon each other and pressed against the Wheel g by means of nut Z and spring-washer m placed between the nut and the outer of the said disks. Each of the latter has on its periphery projections corresponding with the different lines or dots to be drawn. To the arm e is secured the stud n, which carries at its outer end a plate o, Fig. 3.

In the arm e and plate ois adapted to turn a set-screw p, which engages the slide s, adapted to move laterally on the stud n. In a slot formed in the said slide is mounted upon the stud n a lever t, capable of being laterally set in register with any of the disks e' by the said set-screw. In the upper end of the extension b is employed longitudinally a slide ce, having at its upper end a pin y, on which is placed a spiral spring o, which enters the penhandle and presses the pen, which is secured to the lower end of the said slide, downward into its normal position. This slide carries also a small stud w, which projects through a slot in the extension b into the forked upper part of the lever t.

When running the pen over the drawingsurface, the wheelfturns and imparts rotary motion to the wheel g and the disks ,e thereon. The projection on the disk in operation then raises and lowers alternately the said lever and the latter, through the pin w, the slide oc, and thus the pen, o and upon the drawing-surface, thereby producing dots or lines at long or short intervals, as may be desired.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a dotting-pen for drawing, a handle having an extension at its lower end, a drawingpen longitudinally movable in the said extension, a spiral spring pressing the said pen upon the drawing-surface, spur-wheels in gear with each other and pivoted to the said extension, a lever on the latter engaging the said pen, a number of disks having projections attached to one of the said wheels and means for setting the said lever in register with one of the said disks, the said projections raising and lowering the said pen alternately, all combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
