UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM T. IVELLS, OF COLUMBUS, OIIlO.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 714,981, dated December 2, 1902.
Application filed March 24:, 1902, Serial No. 99,598. (No model.)
To all whom. it nutty concern.-
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM T. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and rise ful Improvement in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of knockdown tables, and has particular relation to that class of tables which are designed for the use of physicians and surgeons and for use in hospitals. 1
The objects of my invention are to provid a simple and effective table of improved construction and arrangement of parts, to so construct the same as to permit the various parts thereof being disconnected for the purpose of packing the same in compact form for shipping, and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved table, showing for the sake of clearness a portion of the top plate broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line 00 at of Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a detail view in perspective of the lower end portion of one of the table-standards. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the shelf-supporting brackets, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the frame-uniting brackets.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ four vertical standards 1, which are in the form of angle-bars and which serve to form the four corner posts or standards of the table-body. The lower end of each of these standards 1 has secured within its angle a suitable casterbracket 2, beneath which is journaled a roller or caster 3. Within the angles of the upper portions of the standards 1 are secured inwardly-projecting brackets 42. In the lower portions of the standards 1 I provide similar brackets 5, and between these upper and lower brackets at suitable points in the angles of the standards 1 are provided fixed projecting brackets 6, the projecting portions of which are provided on their upper sides with projecting shelf-supporting buttons 7, of rubber or suitable yielding material.
8 and-9 represent, respectively, the upper and lower horizontal table-frames, which are preferably of the rectangular form shown. The ends of the side and end bars forming said frames are united on their inner sides by angular brackets 10, the arms of which are rigidly connected with the end and side bars of said frames. As indicated more clearly in Fig. 5 of the drawings, each of the brackets 10 is at the junction of its arms thickened, and said thickened portion has projecting downwardly therefrom a pin 11. These pins are adapted, as indicated in the drawings, to enter sockets 16, formed in the upper sides of the brackets 1 and 5. The upper sides of each of the angle-pieces 10, vertically above the pin 11, is provided with a suitable hearing projection 12, of rubber or similar material. Upon the upper sides of these projections or bearing-buttons 12 and likewise upon the upper sides of the bearing-buttons 7 are adapted to rest the horizontal shelves 13, 14, and 15, said shelves being preferably of glass.
From the construction which I have shown and described it will be seen that when the frames 8 and 9 are united with the standards 1 through the medium of the pins 11 a complete and comparatively rigid table is produced. By removing the shelves 13, 14, and 15 and disconnecting the frames 8 and 9 from the standards it is obvious that the various parts of the table which are thus supported may be readily packed into compact form to facilitate shipping or storage.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a table, the combination with the angular corner-standards 1, fixed brackets in their upper and lower portions, said brackets having vertical'sockets formed therein and intermediate fixed brackets 6, of upper and lower horizontal frames 8 and 9,11niting angle-pieces 10 provided with pins 11 adapted to enter the sockets of said upper and lower brackets, and shelves removably supported on said frames 8 and 9 and said intermediate brackets, substantially as specified.
WILLIAM T. WELLS.
