clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in pouring-spouts for vessels, and particularly to a dividing-wall therefor, the object being the provision of means for controlling the entrance of atmosphereto the vessel during the pouring operation.

With this and other objects in view the invention consistsin combination, with a suitable vessel and its spout, of a tongue extending longitudinally, thereof and curved at its inner end beyond the inner end of the spout, so as to form an abutting wall for the contents of the vessel being discharged.

It also consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical section through a vessel the spout of which is provided ,with a tongue embodying the features of the present invention. Fig.2 represents a transverse section on line 2 2 of an enlarged scale of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a reduced view of a barrel, illustrating a spigot in section employing a slightly-modified embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged detail sectional View of the spigot shown in Fig. 3.

In the art to which the present invention relates it has been found desirable to provide means whereby the flow from the filling vessel will be caused to cease automatically in sufficient time to prevent the vessel being filled from overflowing, and in order to accomplish this result it has been proposed to permit entrance of atmosphere to the filling vessel through the discharge-spout thereof. The forms of devices heretofore employed have either been found too expensive or inefficient, because of failure to successfully per init the entrance of air to the filling vessel,

and in order to produce a marketable article I have conceived the employment, in connection with any of the common forms of filling Vessels, of a tongue therefor, which shall divide the discharge-spout into two sections and provide againstthe entrance of liquid into the air-passage. To accomplish this I employ, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, a suitable tongue 1, adapted to be passed longitudinally within any suitable spout 2 for dividing the same into an upper air-passage 3 and a lower liquid-passage 4. The tongue 1 is of transverse concavo-convex form and is made preferably of a flexible material, so as to have a laterally-spreading tendency. The tongue 1 is made of greater length than the spout 2 and is designed 'to' have its outer end lie in the plane of the outer end of saidspout, the inner end of said tongue extending beyond the inner end of the spout and curving, as at 5, sufliciently for forming an abutting wall for the liquid, so as to prevent the same from entering the air-passage 3 during discharge.
