IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
f dlp rlgehnlt referat tu in ttes rttrtr tirnt mit mating @ttt nf its same.
To ALL WHOM 1T VMAY ooNoERN:` y l Be it known that I JOHN BLACKWOOD, 0f Scranton, in the county of Luzerne, and in the State of lenn` -sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying dranings, and to the letters of'reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The figure in the accompanying drawings represents a longitudinal vertical section through the centre of the machine.
In the annexed drawings, A `represents a rectangular box, supported upon suitable legs, and provided with `1 a hinged cover, B. In the bottom of this box is placed a series of movable coil springs, e e, which support a i horizontal corrugated board, G, which has suitable perforations, z, toallow the water to pass through. Within the box is placed a small carriage, D', which has two corrugated rollers E E secured crosswise of the box, within i suitable openings near the bottom of the carriage. The upper journal-bearingsfor these rollers havel pins a; rv, i
which extend up the sides of-the carriage, and have coil Ysprings around them, so that the rollers will adjust themselves to suit the clothing to be washed, instead of being rigid in their bea-rings. Partially embedded in i the top bars of this carriage are small friction-rollers b b, which are so placed as to be directly under two hoi-iv zontal ways C C, which are secured to the under part of the lid, and are connected by pins a a having coil springs around them. These ways serve to keepythe carriage directly upon the clothing, and prevcntftheV carriage from working out of place, as well as to allow the adjustment of said carriage` to suit the quantity of clothing. I represents abar, Awhich is pivoted to the carriage, and extends through a narrow slot, b2, (in the end of the box,) outside of the box, where it is pivoted in a slot, g, in a vertical lever, H, which has its fulcrum on a line with the bottom of the box. The bar I can readily be extracted from the lever H, so that, the carriage can be taken out of the boxu In the operation of this machine the-clothing is placed upon the board Gr, and` water placed within the box. i
The forward and backward motion of the lever H will cause the carriage to work in the box, and the rollers E E resting upon the clothing will thoroughly cleanse them in a short'timc. o i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The corrugated perforated board G, resting upon the springs e c, in the bottom of` the box A, andused in combination with the carriage D, in the manner and for the purposes speciied. i
2. The carriage D with rollers E E, adjustable by means of the journal-bearings having'pins zum, and coil springs, when constructed and operating in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
i 3. The box A, having hinged lid `1?, when said lid is provided with the ways C C, connected by the pins a ai with coil springs, and used in combination with the carriage D, provided with its rollers b b, in the manner and for the purposes described. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing,` I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 21st day of October, 1867.
