Be it known that I, HENRY F. HENNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes, (Case No. 1,) of which the followingis a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of. this specification.

My invention relates to boxes or packages for carrying objects that are to be maintained in the box in a separated relation, and is particularly useful in packing eggs, especially where the eggs are to be boxed in small quantities.

Myinvention has for its object to improve upon that class ofpaokages employing partitions that are formed of cardboard or similar material by cutting the cardboard on three sides and scoring it on the fourth side, whereby the portions of the cardboard thus out and weakened may be extended at right angles to the main sheet of the cardboard to form the partitions. Heretofore it has been proposed to construct such packages in the manner above generally described; but the resulting structures are faulty in that the objects to be carried are inserted through the openings from which the portions of the board forming the partitions have been removed, thereby limiting the size of the objects and aifording too great a space between the partitions in comparison with the bulk of the objects, which would be very harmful, especially where eggs are to be boxed.

It is the object of myinvention to construct a box wherein the space between the partitions thus formed may be completely illed with the objects that are to be boxed, for which purpose the pasteboard or other material employed is so arranged and shaped as to permit of the insertion of the objects between the various partitions in a direction parallel with the openings in the cardboard created in the formation of the partitions. The box thus formed may be provided with a removable lid, which serves to close the box and prevent the objects inserted between the partitions from being displaced. I prefer to employ two sets of partitions to provide two sets of receptacles between the same, a separating partition or wall intervening between the smaller partitions to separate them in the desired groups.

. I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l illustrates a box-body laid fiat to illustrate the various features of construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the cover for the box-body, also laid flat. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box-body when assembled in shape. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan View illustrating the disposition of the various folds of the box. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional elevation on line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a View from beneath of the cover when folded. Fig. 7 is a sectional plan View of the cover, showing the disposition of its folds. Fig. 8 is a sectional View on line S 8 of Fig. 7.

The body of the box is formed of a single sheet of cardboard or similar material that is scored along the dotted lines indicated in Fig. l to form a bottom panel a, imperforate side panels b l), end panels c c, a fractional panel d,that may cover one-half of the bottoni, and an additional panel e, that constitutes the longitudinal partition of the box. There are also provided by means of these scorings supplemental panels ff', that are disposed upon the interior of the box and are covered by the exterior panels b b. The subdividing-partitions g gare formed out of each of these supplemental panelsff', the latter panels being cut along three sides of each opening and scored the fourth side, so that the subdividing-partitions can be placedat right angles to the supplemental panels ff. These su pplemental panels constitute,in fact, sides of the box, the main panels b b being employed to cover, the openings in the supplemental panels to protect the contents of the box.

When the box-body is folded, the retaining-flaps h h are bent atright angles toward the end Walls e c, after which the said end Walls are bent at right angles to the bottom panel a, whereafter the side panels b are also IOO bent at right angles to the bottom panel a, the supplemental panels ff being placed upon the interior of the box, with the retaining-flaps h disposed between the main side panels b and the supplemental side panelsf f'. The supplemental sectional bottom panel d is then adjusted to cover one-half of the main bottom panel (t, whereafter the partition-panel e is disposed at right angles to the main bottom panel. In this manner the subdividing-partilions g are placed at right angles to the bottom a of the box, the side walls of the box,and the longitudinally-disposed partition e, the space between the subdividing-partitions being thus completely accessible for the reception of objects that may completely lill the spaces between the same.

Any suitable form of cover may be placed over the box-body thus created. For the sake of convenience I prefer to employ the form illustrated, which may be formed out of a single sheet of cardboard or other suitable material scored along the dotted lines indicated in Fig. 2. The cover is formed with a main top panel t', side panels 7o 7c, and end panels l l. Retaining-panels m m and n n are provided for securing the end and side panels of the cover at right angles with respect to each other and with the main top panel. In folding the cover the side panels k k are rst placed at right angles to the top panel t', whereafter the panels n 'n are bent at right angles to the panels 7;, whereupon the end panels Z Z are placed at right angles to the top panel i, whereupon the retaining panels or Haps m are folded to secure the cover in its proper shape.

While I have shown two sets of compartments formed by the subdividing-partitions g, which result from the employment of a longitudinal partition e, I do not wish to be limited in all embodiments of the invention to such a plurality of sets of compartments.

By side compartment-walls as used herein, especially in the claims, I mean the walls which are parallel or substantially parallel to the direction of movement of the article when the same is moved into or out of the compartment.

While I prefer the construction of the box body and lid therefor herein particularly described, it is obvious that other constructions might be adopted without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the precise disclosure herein set forth; but,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A box provided with a bottom panel a, side and end panels b, b and c, c, a supplemental side panel f, the said supplemental panel being disposed upon the interior of the box while the main panels b are upon the exterior of the box, when the same is formed,

and subdividing-partitions g, g, cut out of the supplemental panel and extending at right angles to the sides of the box across the bottom thereof, substantially as described.

2. A box provided with a bottom panel a, side and end panels b, b and c, c, a supplemental panel f, the said supplemental panel being disposed upon the interior of the box while the main panels b are upon the exterior of the box, when the same is formed, subdividing-partitions g, g, cut out of the supplemental panel and extending at right angles to the sides of the box across the bottom thereof, a longitudinal partition-panel e, and a supplemental fractional bottom panel d for dividing the box lengthwise, the supplemental panel d being interposed between the panels e andf, substantially as described.

A box provided with a bottom panel a, side and end panels b, b and c, c, a supplemental panel f, the said supplemental panel being disposed upon the interior of the box, while the main panels b are upon the exterior of the box, when the same is formed, subdividing-partitions g, g, cut out of the supplemental panel and extending at right angles to the sides of the box across the bottom thereof, a longitudinal partition-panel e, asupplemental fractional bottom panel d for dividing the box lengthwise, the supplemental panel d being interposed between the panels e and f, retaining-aps 7L, h for uniting the side and end panels of the box, and an additional supplemental panel f serving with the aforesaid supplemental panelfto secure the flaps 71, in place, substantially as described.

4. A box provided with a bottom panel a, side and end panels b, b and c, c, a supple` mental panel f, the said supplemental panel being disposed upon the interior of the box, while the main panels b are upon the exterior of the box, when the same is formed, subdividing-partitions g, g, cut out of the supplemental panel and extending at right angles to the sides of the box across the bottom thereof, a longitudinal partition-panel e, a supplemental fractional bottom panel cl for dividing the box lengthwise, the supplemental panel d being interposed between the panels e and f, retaining-flaps h, h for uniting the side and end panels of the box, and an additional supplemental panel f', serving with the aforesaid supplemental panel f to secure the aps 72 in place, the supplemental panel fl being also provided with subdividing-partitions gcut out of the same, substantially as described.

5. A box having subdividing-partitionscut out interiorly ofthe side panels thereof, the said subdividing-partitions projecting at right angles to the sides of the box toward each other, and a partition extending longitudinally of the box to form two sets of compartments, substantially as described.

6. A compartment-box having two rows of IOO IIO

compartments certain of Whose side Walls'are constituted by tWo lengthwise-running strips and other of whose side Walls are constituted by partitions formed out of such strips, said box also having a partition extending between said rows of compartments to form the other Walls thereof.
