THE NORRIS Firms co, EHQTOJLITHQ. wAsHms'roN. 04 c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES DIEDREAOH, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
STEAM-BOILER.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 712,269, dated October 90 Application filed January 15, 1902. Serial No- 89,932. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES DIEDREACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in steam-boilers, the object of the invention being to provide for the protection of seams, patches, and rivets on a steam-boiler subjected to the enormous heat caused by oil being burned in such furnaces, the object of my invention being to provide sections of firebrick fastened to a barot' iron with studs,- such bar of iron being fastened to the boiler by intermediate studs. i
A further object is to construct the above protection so that the fire-bricks can be taken out separately, and replaced by new ones whenever desired and at a nominal expense.
With these objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangements of parts, as herein set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1; is a side elevation, partly broken away, showing the interior of a furnace and boiler provided with my improved protection devices. Fig. 2 is an end view of cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed cross-sectional view of a joint of the boiler, showing the manner of attaching the fire-bricks over a seam. Fig. iis a longitudinal sectional view. of the same. Fig. 5 is a detached view in section.
It may be here stated that my invention is applicable to many kinds of boilers; but for the sake of convenience and illustration I will describe it in connection with a simple form of boiler.
1 represents an ordinary circular boiler, of which 2 is the fire-box.
3 is a seam where the sections of the boilerplates are attached together by the rivets 4.
5 is a bar or plate of iron running parallel with the seam 3 and having studs 9 inserted in the boiler at intervals to hold said plate 5 in position.
6 represents sections of fire-brick covering each rivet 4 and the seam 3 and fastened by a stud 7 to the plate 5, each being provided with countersinks 8 to receive the nuts 10 of the studs 7.
The fire-bricks 6 are provided with a channel 11 in a continuous line fitting over the seam 3.
The duration of the existence of fire-bricks in locomotive-boilers is from fifty to eighty days.
The sections of fire-brick in the manner of attaching them as- I have abovedescribed permit of their being taken out separately and replaced by new ones without any inconvenience to the remaining sections, thus securing a decided advantage by the use of my invention.
Many slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departingfrom the spirit thereof or limiting its scope. myself to the precise details of'construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a steam-boiler the combination with the boiler 1 of the plate 5, attached to said boiler by the studs 9, the sections of fire- .bricks 6, attached to said plate 5, by the studs 7, the fire-bricks 6, being provided with the countersinks 8, for the reception of the nuts of the studs 7 and 9, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam-boiler a seam and rivet protection consisting of a plate of iron parallel with the rivets and seam of the boiler within the boiler-furnace, such plate being fastened to the boiler by intermediate studs, firebricks fastened to the plate by studs, such fire-bricks being provided with countersinks to receive the nuts of the studs substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam-boiler, a seam and rivet protection comprising a metallic plate attached to the boiler adjacent to the seam, and firebricks fastened on said plate and resting over Hence I do not wish to restrict 1 the seam and rivets and having countersinks also with the channels 11, such channels comin their inner sides receiving the outer ends prehending and covering the seam 3, of the of the rivets. boiler.
