Be it known thatI, JOHN CLAFLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leslie, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lhildrens Seats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Myinvention is a childs scat so constructed that it may be secured to the back of an ordinary chair in such way that the child occupying the seat will be supported at the proper height relative to a table and directly above the chair-seat.

'It consists of novel means for securing the seat to the chair and also of a novel construction of the seat itself, which is constructed of a plurality of parts secured together by hinges or other joints in such way that when the seat is not in use the parts may be turned out, so as to occupy a common plane, such arrangement permitting the seat to be placed against the wall or in any other position where it will occupy but little space.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of one form of my invention applied to a chair. Fig. 2 represents the seat shown in Fig. l extended, the parts being in the position they occupy when it is desired to store or put away the seat. Fig. 3 is a rear View of another and for some reasons the preferred form of my invention. Fig. 4 is a side view of the form of my invention shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a View of the supporting-hooks employed in the form of invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 detached. Fig. 6 is a section on the line a; 0c, Fig. 4, showing the retaining means for the supporting-hooks.

In the drawings, A represents the chair, which is of any usual or preferred form of construction. The form of chair which is best adapted for use in connection with my invention is one in which the upper cross-piece ct of the back is substantially horizontal. The seat comprises three parts, which are hinged together--the bottom piece 2, upon which the child sits, and the two side pieces 3 3. These are united by hinges 4 or equivalent means of connection, so applied as to permit the side pieces to be turned up substantially at right angles to the bottom when the chair is to be used, as indicated in Fig. 1, and to be turned into the position indicated in Fig. 2 when the seat is not in use-that is, with the side pieceslaterally extended beyond the ends of the bottom piece and in substantially a common plane therewith. When the seat is not in use, the parts may be thus arranged in order to permit the seat to be placed against vthe wall or in any contracting space, thus enabling it to be stored or pnt out of sight. The upper end of each side piece is provided with means for attachingit to a cross-piece of a chair-back. In Figs. l and 2 the side pieces are represented as being formed with hooks, which are integral therewith and are adapted to catch over the cross-bars a of the chairback. I prefer, however, that the attaching means should be of such nature as to permit a vertical adjustment of the seat in order that it may accommodate children of Adifferent sizes, and such a construction is represented in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.

@represents a rod preferably of metal and provided at its end with a hook 5, which is adapted to engage with the chair-back, and its lower end constructed so as to engage with one of the side pieces of the seat. To permit such engagement, I prefer to bend the lower end of the rod at right angles to the main body, preferably as indicated at 7, and this end portion of the rod is adapted to enter apertures or recesses 8 in the edge of the side pieces of the seat, there being a sufficient number of these apertures to permit of the necessary adjustment of the seat. Iprefer that the rear edge of the seat should be grooved or channeled, so that the rod 6 when in use is seated in this channel and will come about flush with the rear edge of the side piece. The rod is held in position by suitable retaining means, such as the hooks and guides 9 and l0. Those parts of the seat which engage with the chair maybe provided with means which will prevent rubbing or marring of the chair when the seat is applied and in use.

Among the advantages incident to my invention the following may be mentioned: A seat such as described possesses all of the advantages of the ordinary childs high chair, while in addition thereto the chair affords a broader, heavier, and more secure base, thus rendering little danger of the seat being ICD turned over by the child. The seat of the chair affords a rest for the feet of the child. By constructing the several parts in the manner indicated it is possible to store or place the seat out of the way when not in use, as when opened out, as in Fig. 2, it occupies but little space, and by employing the adjustable supporting means which has been described the chair may be so adjusted as to exactly suit the requirements of a child at the different stages of its growth.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. A childs seat comprising a bottom piece and two side pieces hinged together and arranged to permit the side pieces to be turned at substantially right angles with the bottom when in use, and to be laterally extended beyond the ends of the bottom and in substantially a common plane therewith when not in use, said side pieces havingsnspension means, substantially as set forth.

2. A childs seat adapted to be suspended from the back of an ordinary Chair, comprising a bottom piece and two side pieces, such pieces being hinged together and arranged to have the side pieces turned down or laterally extended beyond the ends of the bottom and in substantially a common plane therewith when the seat is not -in use, and suspending means at the upper rear portions of the side pieces, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein-described ehilds seat, comprising the bottom piece 2 and the two side pieces 3 3 hinged thereto, the rear edges of the side pieces having a series of perforations 8, in combination with the adjustable snpporting-rods 6 formed at their upper ends with hooks and their lower ends being bent to adapt them to enter the said perforations, and means for holding the rods with their bent ends in the said perorations, substantially as set forth.

4. A seat consisting of the combination of abottom piece, foldable side pieces hinged one at each side of the bottom piece, and suspension means 'on said side pieces and foldable therewith acting when in use to sustain the bottom piece and keep the side pieces at substantially right angles to the bottom piece.
