Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM VICKERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Edgerton, in the county of Rock and State of XVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Load-Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in load-binders, and relates particularly to that class of devices employed for binding lumber on wagons, cars, sleds, or other vehicles.

Ordinarily a chain is linked or thrown around the load of lumber and bound thereto by means of a loop twisted in the chain by a pole, which latter is employed as a lever for tightening the chain to hold the lumber in place. It is not only oftentimes difiicult to bind the load sufliciently with such a device, owing to the constant state of vibration incident to the jar of the wagon or other vehicle, but the chain oftentimes injures the lumber, while the pole and chain when not in use are a source of constant annoyance.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple mechanism for binding the lumber and which maybe conveniently tightened as may be required.

A practical embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and in describing the invention in detail reference will be had to these drawings, and like numerals therein will indicate like parts throughout the different views, in whichv Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon and load of lumber, showing my improved binder in position for binding the lumber on the wagon. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view through the running-gear of the wagon, showing the load of lumber in end elevation and the device in position.

To put my invention into practice, I pro vide two binding-bars 1 and 2, the former to engage the load of lumber 3 on its upper face and the bar 2 to engage the underneathface of the load of lumber. These bars in practice are made from suitable hard wood, such as oak, and of a size about two inches by three inches by four feet long. The top bar 1 is provided near each end with an aperture to receive threaded bolts 4:, provided on their lower ends with hooks 5. These bolts are threaded through plates '6, mounted on the bar 1, and they are adjusted vertically by means of nuts 7, provided with a suitable handle 8. The lower bar 2 is likewise apertured near each end and has mounted there in bolts 9, each of which has an eye 10. These bolts are held by nuts 11 both above and below the bar 2, as shown. Chains are connected to the eyes 10, and the other ends of these chains or any one of the links, ac-

cording to the size of the load of lumber, is adapted to be engaged with the hooks 5, whereby the bars 1 and 2 are connected together and the load of lumber is firmly bound upon the wagon.

It will be evident that by tightening the nuts 7 the pull of the bolts 4: on the chains 2 will firmly bind both of the bars on the load of lumber and securely bind the latter in position. It will also be evident that the device may be placed on the load at any desired point, there being no attachments for connection to the vehicle. The loosening of the nuts 7 will slacken the chains and permit ready removal of the device.

In the practice of the invention various changes may be made Without departing from the general invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A load-binder comprising an upper and a lower binding-bar, provided adjacent their ends with bolt-openings, bolts arranged in the openings of the said upper bar and having their lower ends bent to form hooks, eyebolts arranged in the openings of the said lowenbinding-bai', nuts secured on the said bolts, and chains having their lower ends secured in the said eyebolts, the hooks or" the said upper bolts adapted to engage the links of the said chains, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
