\VlLLlAM ROACH, OF ARGYLE, TEXAS.
BLOWER FOR FO RG ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,614, dated. October '7, 1902.
Application filed June 19, 1902.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM ROACH, a cit izen of the United States, residing at Argyle, in the county of Benton, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Blowers for Forges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to blacksmiths forges; and it has for its object to provide a construction in which a portion of the heat of the fire will be used for generating steam by means of which the blower of the forge will be operated.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which a portion of the heat from the fire-pot will be utilized and in which the waste heat in its passage to the chimney or hood will be absorbed in part, so that the operation of the blower will be economical.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a forge and showing in elevation the blower and the engine for operating it. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the fire-pot. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the fire-pot and boiler, with their connecting-pipes. Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing the cast fire-pot.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a forge comprising a base 5, built of bricks or other material, and atthe rear end ofwhich is the hood 7, through which the products of combustion pass to the chimney. In a depression in the upper face of the base 5 and beneath the hood 7 is arranged the firepot 6, the wall of which is in the form of an inverted bee-hive coil, at the lower minor end of which is an opening with which is connected the air-feed pipe 8, which leads from a blower 9,-which when operated forces the air up through the bottom of the fire-pot and induces combustion of the fuel in the fire-pot in the usual manner.
Arranged between the fire-pot and hood and slightlyin the rear of the fire-pot is the waterback 10, having perforations in its front side, in which are screwed the short sections of Serial No. 112,326. (No model.)
Connected with the opposite ends of the coil forming the fire-pot are the pipes 13 and 14:, which are connected at their upper ends to the bottom of the water-back 10 at opposite sides of the latter, so that a circulation of water from the fire-pot to the water-back is secured and an efficient heating of the water results.
On the back of the support 15 for the hood is a shelf 16, on which is mounted the engine 17, connected by the feed-pipe 18 with the top of the water-back 10, the engine being provided also with an exhaust-pipe 19,which discharges upwardly into the hood. The blower 9 is supported on the shelf 20 at the back of the base 5, and a belt 21 connects the blower with the engine.-
The blower is provided with a handle 22 of usual arrangement for operating it initially while the water in the boiler is being heated to a degree sufficient to produce steam enough to operate the engine, after which the engine operates the blower.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings there is shown a construction of fire-potin the form of a casting. The walls of this casting are hollow, the sides of the walls lying close together, so that the water in the walls will be quickly heated and proper circulation of the water from the fire-pot to the water-back of the boiler will be insured. The cast fire-pot has nipples 23 and 2% for attachment of the pipes 13 and 14 to connect the fire-pot with the water-back.
It will be understood that in practice other modifications of the construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. Aforge comprising a base having a hood supported thereabove,a fire-pot mounted in the base and having a hollow Wall and an opening through its bottom, a blower having an air-pipe connected with the opening in the the fire-pot, said water-back having pipes engaged in its face and extending part way over the fire-pot between it and the hood, a steamengine, a steam-feed pipe leading from the water-back to the steam-engine, a blower operatively connected to the engine and an airfeed pipe leading from the blower to the lower end of the coil of the fire-pot.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ROACH. Witnesses:
