ELECTRIC-LAMP GLOWER AND METHOD OF ATTACHING TERMINAL WIRES THERETO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,369, dated September 30, 1902. Application filed April 10, 1902. Serial No. 102,313. (No model.)
by a simple and inexpensive method and sothat the resulting product shall be efficient and durable in service.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a glowerblank and two terminal wires before the said parts are combined. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the blank shownin Fig, 1, with the terminal wires inserted in the ends thereof. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating a modification. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a completed glower.
In the manufacture of electric-lamp glowers of the class above referred to more or less difficulty has been experienced in so attaching terminal wires to the glowers that the connection may be satisfactory from an electrical standpoint and also so that the mechanical union may be durable without an undue expenditure of time and skilled labor.
The invention constituting the subjectmatter of this application fulfils all the above requirements and has been found satisfactory in practice.
In practicing my invention I utilize blanks of tubular form, such as that indicated at 1 in Fig. 1, and after such blank has become hard and compact, either by drying in the air or by both this treatment and subsequent roasting at high temperature, I dip one end of each terminal wire 2, the diameter of which is slightly less than the interior diameter of the glower, into a comparatively thin paste and then insert this paste-coated end into the end of the blank, as indicated in Fig. 2. This affords a temporary connection between the terminal wires and the body or blank 1, which is sufficiently firm to permit of handling the device. The paste might obviously be applied to the interior of the glower-blank instead of to the ends of the terminal wires, though the application to the terminal wires will ordinarily be found more convenient in practice.
In case the glower-blank is of such composition or character as to absorb moisture rapidly, and thus act upon the paste so as to interfere with the proper insertion of the terminal wires, the wires may be inserted'without a previous application of paste either to them or to the interior of the blank. A temporary joint may then be made by applying a body 3, of paste or cement, to the end of the blank and around the Wire, as indicated in Fig. 3.
After the parts are assembled, as shown in either Fig. 2 or Fig. 3, I applya body of paste or cement at to each end of the gloWer-body and the contiguous portion of the terminal wire, this paste or cement being of like or similar material to that composing the glowerbody and being preferably substantially globular in form, as indicated, though it may be given a different form, if desired. The paste or cement t may then be hardened by drying or roasting in a suitable frame.
If desired, the body of material 4. may be applied in two or more layers, which may be separately roasted, and the layers may be of different materials or compositions of materials.
This method of fastening terminal wires to glowers is simple and inexpensive, and the resulting product is, as has already been indicated, durable and efficient in service.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The method of attaching terminal wires to a tubular glower-blank, which consists in inserting the ends of the wires into the ends and globular bodies of cement surrounding the contiguous ends of the glower-body and the wires.
