TELESCOPING VALISE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 710,037, dated September 30, 1902.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BODWELL,

Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeville, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescoping Valises, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in telescoping Valises, the object of my invention being to provide avalise which can be enlarged or reduced in size, according tothe requirements of the user, which shall be cheap and simple in construction, and which shall effectually exclude dust from entrance into the valise either when extended or contracted in capacity.

My invention therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the valise contracted, the top being shown detached. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same extended. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same contracted. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same extended.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the top of a telescoping valise,-which top is of the ordinary construction. The lower portion 2 is made in two sections, of which the upper section 3 telescopes over the lower part 4.

The upper edge of the outer section 3 is connected to the upper edge of the inner section 4 by a web 5 of canvas or other suitable cloth, or leather, or other flexible material, being generally of the same material of which the valise is made, said web being of suffie cient height to permit the full extension of the outer part 3 above the inner part 4. The top surrounds the outer part 3 in the usual manner. Theweb 5 connects the two sections through their entire periphery, and thus renders the connection between them impervious to dust and dirt, and is at the same time cheap and simple in construction and in the material used. Also the web being made of thin material occupies little space when the lower portion of the valise is contracted. While I have, however, here shown said web as connected with the upper edges of the two sections of the body of the valise, and this is the preferred form of my invention, said Application filed June 2,1902. web may also be connected with said two sec tions at other portions thereof, all that is necessary being that the web should be so connected as to permit of the extension of the outer section upward above the inner section. Also instead of the body, or in addition thereto, the top may be made in two telescoping sections in like manner, or the top may be as in an ordinary valise with opening jaws, or the top, as shown, may be dispensed with and the opening jaws attached to the upper edges of the part 3, or a hinged lid may be attached to the part 3.

I claim 1. A telescoping valise,one portion of which comprises two sections, each rectangular in 'form and having substantially rigid sides,

the outer section telescoping snugly over the inner section, and a web of flexible material extending around the whole periphery of each section, one edge of which is secured to the inner section throughout its whole periphery to make a dust-proof joint, and the other edge of which is secured to the outer section throughout its whole periphery to make a dust-proof joint, said web being of such width and attached to the inner and outer sections at such heights throughout as to permit and to limit the movement of the outer section relatively to the inner section through substantially the height of said inner section, substantially as described.

A telescoping valise,one portion of which comprises two sections, each rectangular in form and having substantially rigid sides, the outer section telescoping snugly over the inner section and a web of flexible material extending around the whole periphery of each section, the lower edge of which is attached to'the top of the inner section, and the inner edge of which is attached to the top of the outer section, eachof such attachments being dust-proof and extending around the entire periphery of the section, substantially as described. 7
