GEORGE H. MCGUIRE, OF DAIILONEGA, GEORGIA.
WING ATTACHMENT FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 709,505, dated September 23, 1902.
Application filed March 15, 1902. Serial No. 98,410. (No model.)
To all, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I-I. MCGUIRE, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Dahlonega, in the county of Lumpkiu and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Wing Attachment for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved wing attachment for plows whereby an ordinary cultivating-plow may be provided at will with one or a pair of wings and means to extend the same laterally beyond one or both sides of the tongue or shovel, as may be required by the character of the work to be performed; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is partly an end elevation and partlya sectional view of a plow provided with a wing attachment embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the rack-bar for locking the adjusting-levers in position. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the foot-plate. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the fulcrumplate. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing a modified construction of a lever and connections between the same and both of the hinged wings.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown the beam a, the standard I), having the vertical slot 0, and the handles d, with their connecting cross-bar e, are of the construction usual in cultivator-plows.
In carrying out my invention I provide a foot-plate 1, which is preferably of the form shown in detail in Fig. 4 and is adapted to be detachably secured on the front side of the standard between the latter and the tongue or shovel fof the plow by the bolt g, which secures the tongue or shovel to the standard, the said bolt extending through either of a series of openings 2, with which the foot-plate is provided. On' opposite sides of the foot-plate are wings 3, which are hinged to the foot-plate, as at 4:, the said foot-plate and the said wings being provided with complementary overlapping parts, which are bored to receive the pintles 5. By removing the foot-plate.
form here shown, but may be of any other suitable form, and the same are provided on their rear sides with keepers 6.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. 1 and 2 each of the wings 3 is provided with an adjusting-lever 7, and the said levers are fulornmed on the rearwardly-extending stem 8 of a fulcrum-plate 9, which is detachably bolted to the under side of the beam at at the rear end thereof. 'Ihelower ends of the levers are pivotally connected to the keepers 6, and hence by means of the said levers either or both of the wings 3 may be extended laterally from the foot-plate and disposed at any desired angle.
On the cross-bar e is detachably secured a bar 10, which has rack'notches 11 on its front side adapted to be engaged by the upper portions of the adjusting-levers 7. The latter are provided on their rear sides with springs 12, the free ends of which engage the rear side of the rack-bar 10, and hence serve to lock the said levers to the said rack-bar when the levers have been appropriately adjusted.
It will be understood that my improved wing attachments may be readily secured to and detached from a plow of ordinary construction and that the same enable the plow to sweep or throw the earth to either side or both sides, as may be desired.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 I employ only one lever 7, which is fulcrumed, as before described, and is connected to both of the hinge-wings by means of links 13. The latter at their inner portions and the leverat its lower portion are provided with adjustingopenings 14, which enable a pivotal bolt 15 to connect the said links to the said lever at any desired adjustment. It will be understood that this lever and its links cause the wings 3, to which the links are connected, to be operated reversely, so that when one wing is extended laterally the other will be disposed parallel or substantially parallel with the line of draft. This construction is espe cially adapted for use on a plow for turning heavy soil.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In combination with the standard and tongue or shovel of a plow, a foot-plate fitted and vertically adjustable between them and having a hinged Wing, and an adjusting-lever connected to the wing, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a plow of the class described, a foot-plate detachably fitted and vertically adjustable between the standard and tongue or shovel and having a hinged Wing, an adjusting-lever connected to the wing, and means to lock the lever and thereby cause the same to secure the wing when adjusted, substantially as described.
3. A foot-plate adapted to be d-etach'ably secured between the tongue or shovel and standard of a plow, in combination with a wing hinged to the foot-plate, a lever connected to the wing, a rack-bar between the handles to engage and secure the lever when adjusted and a fulcrum for said lever adapted to be detaohably secured to the beam of the plow, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEO. H. MCGUIRE.
