IMPROVED FAUUET FOR STOVB-RESERVOIRS.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOHN B. CROWLEY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Boilers or Reservoirs of Cooks Stoves; and I hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification;

My invention relates to an improved form and arrangement of faucet for the boilers or reservoirsof cookingstoves, which enablessthe ready drawing of of the contents without danger of scalding young or careless persons,

who often become very seriously injured by incautiousmeddling with the faucet.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a reservoir provided with my improved faucet.

Figure 2 is a vertical section through the faucet.

A may represent a stove-reservoir of customary construction. B'is a spout, which being attached to and passing through a side end of the reservoiiy near its lower portion, rises within the reservoir so as toform a seat, C, for a valve, 1)., whose stem d exten'ds upward through an orifice, e, in the lid E, and terminates in a knob, F, i above the reservoir, for convenient handling by adults,but inaccessible to-children. The inlet 0 of my spout may be at such distance above the bottom of the reservoir as to be clear-of sediment, and such as to maintain at all times a body of water in the bottom of the boiler, sufficient to prevent the-burning out of the same; The preferred form of my valve is an inverted coniealor conoidal plug, D, ground to and fitting a corresponding countersunk seat, 0, in the elevated spout-inlet. Projecting inwardly from the side of the reservoir is a notched or forked lug,.G, and a perforated lug, H. The oflice of these lugs is to hold and guide the stem d, and the lug G serves the additional purpose of arresting the ascent of the valve, so as at all times to retain-its point or apex within the seat 0, which apex serves to lead the valve down to its seat on the return stroke. Water may at any instant be drawn from the reservoir bysimply lifting the knob F, and on releasing the same, the valve drops of itselfinto its seat and closes the spout. It will be seen that this faucet is entirely free from the danger of scalding children, because entirely out of their reach to handle, and because it closes of itself the instant that it is left at liberty. v v

I have selected for illustration the preferred form of my invention, but do not desire to restrict myself to the precise arrangement here represented, so long as the essential features are secured by means substantially equivalent; for example, the gravitating metallic valve D may be replaced by one of gum or leather, or by a turn-faucet.

The essential features of my improvement are a discharge-spout closed by a valve within the boiler, and

operated by a stem or handle accessible to adults only, and I prefer that said valve be metallic and self-closing, as'iu the accompanying form or type of my invention.

I claim herein as new, and of my invention-- I 1. The provision, in a stove-reservoir or boiler, of the spout B, having within the reservoir a plug or valve, D, whose stem extends andis operated above the top of the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7 v

2. The arrangement in a stove-reservoir of the spout B, havingwithin 'the reservoir the upturned seat or inlet C, and self-closing valve or'plug D,'whose stein or handle extends through 'an orifice, c, in the reservoirlid, and'is'confined in lugs or guides G H,'substantially as set forth.
