CHARLES YOUNG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DETACHABLE HANDLE FOR GASKETS, BOXES, 81.0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 707,669, dated August 26, 1902.
Application filed October 11, 1901. Serial No. 78,312. (No modeLi To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES YOUNG, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles for Caskets, Boxes, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates more particularly to carriers or detachable handles employed on caskets, boxes, and the like for convenience in transporting such from place to place.
The invention designs to provide a carrier or detachable handle which can be produced at a low cost and in which the socket-plate can be secured to the casket or box in such manner that the cutting away of the casket or box is avoided.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle which can be folded so it may be conveniently carried in a pocket when not in use.
Astill further object of the invention is to provide an improved construction in which the handle is securely held in the socket-plate and in such manner that the handle can only be detached by twisting.
lVith these objects in View the invention consists in the several novel features of construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing a casket provided with the improved carrier. Fig. 2 is a View upon an enlarged scale, the socket-plate being shown in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are inner face views showing the bandle in the positions assumed while being attached to the plate, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the handle secured in the plate and in position for use.
A denotes a plate provided with holes a, through which screws can be extended to secure the plate to a casket or box. The plate is formed with straight'inner and outer faces. The inner face is adapted to fit snugly against a box or casket. The plate is provided with a slot wherein a lug b of a handle B can be detachably secured. The slot in the plate comprises two longitudinally-extending portions a and a arranged out of alinement, and a connecting portion 0. all of which have beveled sides, as shown at a. The lug b is formed with correspondiugly-beveled sides 1), adapted to fit snugly in the longitudinal portions of the slot, and is substantially the same thickness as the plate, so the face 19 of the handle will fit against the outer face of the plate and serve as a bearing-surface, while the inner face of the lug will engage the casket or box, and thus securely hold the handle in the plate. The beveled sides of the slot are cut away, as at a to permit the lug to be inserted into the slot. To attach the handle to the plate, the lug is inserted into the slot atthe end at which the sides of the slot are cut away, as shown in Fig. 3, then shifted along the portion a of the slot until the sides of portion a are encountered, and then the handle will be twisted, as shown in Fig. 4E, so the lug will enter portion a of the slot. The lug will then be confined against transverse movement in the slot, and side a of connecting portion a of the slot will prevent detachment of the parts by longitudinal shift. By a reverse twist and longitudinal shift of the handle the parts can be readily detached. When the plate is secured to the side of a box, slot a will be uppermost, so the:beveled end a will be engaged by the correspondingly-beveled edge 17 of the lug when in use. It will be observed that when the handle has been attached it cannot become detached by the de scending or sliding of the lug in the slots, but only by an irregular movement. Thus the invention provides an improved construction in which the handle is detachable, but will remain interlocked with the plate. The employment of a lug and beveled sides of the slot is important, because the necessity of cutting away the box or casket is avoided.
The handle B is preferably formed of sections pivotally connected together bya pivot 0, extended through the bifurcated end of the handle-section B and the projecting ear I)", which fits between the ends of section B. The sections are provided with abutments 11 which engage each other to restrict the relative movement of the handle-sections when in use. Whenfolded, the sections will assume the position shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2, and the handle can beconveniently carried in a pocket.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Adetachable handle or lifter comprising the combination with a handle provided with a fiat contact-surface and an interlocking lug, of a plate having a slot therein, said slot comprising an enlarged portion wherethrongh the lug can be inserted, another portion wherein the lug will be held, and a connecting portion formed so the lug can be passed therethrough by twisting, and whereby the lug will be held against withdrawal by longitudinal movement in the slot.
2. Adetachable handle or lifter comprising the combination with a handle, provided with a fiat contactsurface, and an interlocking lug having beveled sides, of a plate having a slot therein, said slot having sides correspondingly beveled to hold said lug, said slot comprising an enlarged portion wherethrongh the lug can be inserted, another portion out of alinement with said enlarged portion and a connecting portion formed so the lug can be passed therethrough by twisting, and whereby the lug will be held against withdrawal by longitudinal movement in the slot.
3. A detachable handle or lifter comprising the combination with a handle provided with a flat contact-surface and with a lug having beveled sides, of a plate having a slot therein, said slot having correspondingly-beveled CHARLES YOUNG.
