.PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID M. BURNS AND ALEXANDER B. BURNS, OF GREENBAY, WISCONSIN.
BOILER OR WATER-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Y Letters Patent N o. r707,203, dated August 19, 1902.
Application filed May 5, 1902. .Serial No. 105,952. (No model.)
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID M. BURNS and ALEXANDER B. BURNS, citizens ofthe United States, and residentsof Greenbay, in the.` county of Brown anfd State of Wisconsin, havev invented certain .new and,y useful Improvements in Boilers or Water-Heaters; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof.
Our invention has for its object to provide simple, economical, and durable boilers and water-heaters that can be readilyfcleaned, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of partsparticularly set forth with reference lto the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a vertical section View of a boiler or water-heater in accordance with our invention,'this y view beingindicated by line 1v1 in thethird ligure Fig. 2, a partly-sectional elevation of the apparatus indicated by lines 2 2 in said third figure, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section'view indieated by lines 3 3 in the first-ligure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, Aindi'- cates a cylindrical shell, and B; O opposite angular boxes that are partly within the shell, these boxes being of greater length than depth and located approximately midway between Builtin shell` A, central of same below boxes B C, is a iire-I the extremities of said shell.
chamber D, and ash-pit draft-'space is provided below the lire-chamber, the diameter of said lire-chamber being such that water-space.
Shell A is provided with/a lower inlet-nip-v ple e and upper `outlet-nipple f for connec` tion with pipes, and an upper manhole of said shell isclosedby' a plate G on pin g, that ex- 5o tends through a yoke H and engages a clampnut h, the ends of the yoke being in opposition to the aforesaid shell.
Midway of its length box B is partitioned bysafbaftle-plate I, and a similar plate J is arranged in box'O at a greater elevation. The
products of combustion pass from this com-l partment `through tiers of ilues L into the .lowerl major.. compartment of box O, then through tiers of lues M into the upper comipartment of box B, and from thence through tiersfof'ilues N into the Vupper minor compartment of box 0, one end of thiscompartmentfbeing lopen and connected by'a pipe P or otherwise with a smoke-stack.
From the foregoing it-wil1 be understoodv `that waterin shell A is around and over the lire-chamber, the pipes K, iues L M N, and so much of the boxesB O as extend into said shell 'being submerged, whereby a very con- As'iderable-radiating-surface is exposed to said water to rapidly heat the same, the products of combustion being utilized to the best advantage. I
With the exception of the doors, frames,
`nipples, manhole-closure, and fire-chamber grate the heater isjpreferably of boiler-plate :in water-tight union. The doors B' C are practically sides of boxes B C opposite -tert minals of the fines aforesaid and being swung open said boxes and flues may be readily cleaned. Access to pipes K is also possible through box B when the door of same is open.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A'boiler or water-heater comprising a cylindrical shell, boxes'extendingl intofthe shell and provided with outerdoors, ilues in tiers connecting the boxes,a bafflelplate'dt viding one of the boxes into approximately equal upper and lower compartments, asimilar plate in the other` boxat a greater elevation than the plate aforesaid,"the minor upper compartment of the latter box being open `roo ssA f at one end for communication with a smokestack, a fire-chamber 0f less diameter than said shell built therein central of same, and pipes, leading from the fire-chamber into the lower compartment of the box aforesaid.
2. A boiler or Water-heater comprising a cylindrical shell, boxes extending into the shell and provided with outer doors, fines in tiers connecting the boxes, a baflie-plate dividing one of the boxes into approximately equal upper and lower compartments, a similar plate in the other box at a greater elevation than the plate aforesaid, the minor upper Compartment of the latter box being open at one end for communication with a smoke-
