BENJAMIN F. MAYO, OF: SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR, BYQMESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE UNITED SHO E' MA PORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CHINERYOOMPANY, A coR- RACEWAY FOR NAIL-ASLSIO-RTIUNG. MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,142, d ted-August 19," 1902. a a
. Application first m 24',- 1898. F
To 'all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. MAYp, of Salem, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Raceways for Nail-Asserting Machines, of which the following description, in connectionwith the accompanying drawings,'is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In machines for assortingjnails the nails laid in grooves of. thejracewayfheadsand' points indiscriminatelyare led to apparatus for insuring the delivery of saidnails with their heads or pointsall in one direction.
way of discharging from the raceway-grooves imperfect nails or slivers of metal.
This invention has for its object an improved construction of the raceway and grooves, whereby any small nails or slivers may be discharged before arriving at the end of the raceway.
In accordance with my invention I-provide each raceway-groove with a tapered slot arranged in the generaldirection of the length of and preferably substantially coinciding for a part or the whole of its length with said groove, said slot being of a length preferably a little greater than the length of the nails to be assorted, the narrowest part of each of said slots being represented as extended-upwardly inthe direction of the length of the groove, one end (herein represented asthe lowerend) of each of said slots beingprovided, preferably, with an. enlarged opening."
Figure l, in plan'view, shows part of a raceway provided with my improvements; Fig. 2, a section thereof in the dotted line at, and Fig. 3 a partial cross-section in the line m.
The metallic bed or plate A, as herein shown, has a series ofgrooves a. made in rising portions of the plate, and-the face of the bed between the said grooves is concaved as at b, the lower ends of the concaved spaces being providedwith open spaces b", through which may drop any nails thrown on the raceway-plate which do not enter the racewaygrooves (11.. Each groove ais provided with a tapered S1013-Ct' and, as shown, with a hole through the; groove in: the general direction of its length'and preferably so as to substancIaim as new, and desire to secure by-Letters Serial No. 681,612. (No model.) J
- a I The wider part of a the slot starts at the 111016 a and, as herein represented, is carried toward the upper end of*the plate, and the slot is-i preferably longer than the length of the nails* to:be assorted, said slot being cut tially coincide fora partjof 2 its} lengthwith said groove, the slot shown beingrepresented as removing more stock from one than from theother; side wall of the groove. With this slot in' the groove any perfectnails of a diameter greater than the width ofthe slot, whether head or point first, ".will readily pass the hole a but it a silver smalleror shorter than the regular nails being assorted comes in position above said slot'said sliver immediately drops into and through said slot into a suitable receptacle 0, located below the plate A. When the smaller end of the sliver leads, it will drop through the slot immediately, as shownby dotted-line's, Fig. 2, while if the larger end of the sliver leads it will not drop until the said largerend arrives above the hole a The hole a is of a diameter greater than the width of thegroove.
At the 1eftin Fig..1 I have shown a series of nails of proper size running down the raceway-groove.
Having described my invention, what I Patent, isl 1"." A raceway presenting a groove provided in its bottomwith an uncovered slot arranged in the'general'direction of said groove, said slot being longer than the nail being handled.
' 2. A raceway having a groove provided with a slot arranged in the general direction of said groove, with an enlargement at the end of said slot, said slot being longer than the nail being handled. a a 9 3. A raceway having a groove provi ed'with a slot arranged in the general direction of said groove, and .with an enlargement at the-end of said slot.
4:. A raceway having a groove provid a tapered slot arranged in the general direction of said groove.
5. A raceway having a groove provided with edwith a tapering slot located in the general direction of said groove, and a hole intersecting said slot,to operate substantially as described.
6. A raceway having a groove, and a tapering slot made therein in the general direction of the length of said groove, said slot removing more stock from one than from the other side of said groove.
7. A raceway having a groove provided with a slot arranged in the general directionof the groove, and ahole intersecting said slot, said hole being of greater diameter than the Width of the groove and located in the bottom of said groove.
8. A raceway having a groove provided with a tapered slot formed therein in the general BENJAMIN F. MAYO.
