ADOLPHUS A. KNUDSON AND FRANK H. CLARK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
STETHOSCOPIC INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,934, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed April 7,1902. Serial No. 101,668. (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ADOLPHUS A. KNUD- soN and FRANK H. CLARK, citizens of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Stethoscopic Instruments, of which the followingisa specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in stethoscopic instruments; and the object of our invention is to provide a neat and compact instrument which may be placed conveniently on any part of the patient and may be folded into a small space when desired. We attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device complete. Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a View of the double tube member. Fig. 4 is a view of the case. Fig. 5 is a view of the inner diaphragm. Fig. 6 is a View of the outer diaphragm. Fig. 7 is a view of the connecting-ring.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
On one side of the ring Z) we attach a disk or diaphragm a. On the opposite side of the ring I) we attach another disk or diaphragm 0, provided with a circular opening 0'. The disks or diaphragms a and c are preferably provided with annular corrugations. On the outside of the ringb we form grooves 12' and 6 near each edge. The disks or diaphragms a and 0 may be easily and securely attached to the ring I) by bending over the edges of the respective disks or diaphragms a and a, so that the bent-over edges engage the grooves b and b in the ring b. The double diaphragm thus formed is placed within the concave case (1 with the perforated diaphragm c innermost. On the outside of the case (I we provide the chamber 6, forming a double socket. An opening 6 is provided between the interior of the chamber a and the hollow concave case d. We provide openings 6 and e at each end of the chamber e. The counterpart tubes g it, having their ends 9' and 7t, respectively, bent inwardly, are inserted in the chamber or double socket e, the end 9 of the tube 7 being inserted in the opening c and the bentover end 7t of the tube it being inserted in the opening 6 Ve provide a barf between the tubes 9 and h and attached to them above the bent-over ends 9 and h to hold thetubes in position. Tubes 7c Z, of flexible rubber or of any other desired material, areattached to the ends 9" and 7L2 of the tubes g and 7t and. are provided with the usual ear-pieces for insertion in the ears of the physician or operator using the device.
In operation the diaphragm Ct is placed against the body of the patient near the organ which is under examination. The soundwaves within the hollow concave case (Z are conveyed through the opening 6 into the chamber or hollow socket e and thence by means of the tubes g and h and kl to the ears of the operator or person using the device.
The hinge formed at the junction of the tubes g and h and the chamber a by the ends g and 7b of the tubes g and h, respectively, turning in the sockets formed by the openings e and 0 respectively, in the ends of the chamber a, permit the tubes 9 and 71 to be folded down, so that the device may be placed underneath the patient or at any part of the patients body without great inconvenience.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a hollow case,a diaphragm therein, an air-chamber attached to and opening into the hollow case, such chamber being provided with two apertures forming sockets, such sockets being disposed diametrically of the hollow case, tubes in the sockets and retatable therein to fold in a plane parallel with the plane of the case or at an angle thereto, and means for retaining the ends of such. tubes in the sockets, substantially as shown and do scribed.
In a device of the characterdescribed, the combination of a hollow case,a diaphragm therein, two sockets opening into such case, such sockets being disposed diametrically oi' the hollow case, tubes in the sockets and retatable therein to fold in a plane parallel with the plane of the case or at an angle thereto,
and means for retaining the ends ofsnch tubes in such sockets, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the character described a hollow case, two metallic disks within such case, an annular hand between the edges of such disks, an air-chamber attached to and openinginto such hollow case, apertures therein forming sockets, such sockets being disposed diametrically of the hollow case, tubes in the sockets and rotatable therein to fold in a plane parallel with the plane of the case or at an angle thereto, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a device of the character described, a primary air-chamber, a diaphragm therein, a
