SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 705,896, datedJ'uly 29, 1902.
I Application iiled April 9, 1902, Serial No. 102,066. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES WILSON BARNES, of Beaverton, in the county of Washington and State of Oregon, have -invented a new and useful Improvement in Feed-Troughs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nature of an improved feed-trough designed more especially for feeding hogs. Its Objectis `to promote cleanliness and secure better sanitation by protecting the food from being soiled-by the' dirt of the hogs feet, to enable the small hogs to feed equally without being displaced by the large ones, to keep the hogs from feeding until the food is all properly placed in the troughfand to protect the clothing of the person feeding from being soiled by the splashing and crowding of the hogs.
It consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of a rotary adjustable trough and rotary adjustable guard-board and means for locking them in their two positions, as will be hereinafter fully described ywith reference to the accompanying drawings, lin which Figure 1 is a front view; Fig. '2, a back view; Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section showing the position of parts when thehogs are feeding, and Fig. 4 a similar view showing the position of parts when the food is be-` ing deposited in the trough.
In the drawings, 14 is a platform on which the hogs stand while feeding. This platform is mounted on end sills 13 13, to which arefalsoy secured the upright end frames 11 11. These end frames are connected on the side upon which the hogs feed by a cross-bar 24. p,
L is the trough, which extends from one end frame l1 to the other andvis pivotally supported therein by removable pins or trunnions 7 7 at the center of. its ends, so as to have a half-rotation from the position shown in Fig.v 3 to the dotted position shown in Fig. 4. When in the position shown inFig. 3, the front edge of the trough rests against and is stopped by the front board 24 in position for the hogs to feed, and when turned to the dotted position shownv in Fig. 4 the trough is made to discharge its contents and may be washed out clean. The trough is divided transversely into compartments by bars 8, which give space for each hog to feed withing 'all the way to the bottom. This is to holdwater.
Just above the trough there is arranged a guard-board 5, which is pivotally supported at the middle' of the ends on pins 21 in the end frames and is adapted to be turned about 4its horizontal axis, so as to open the trough to the hogs side when feeding or cut off the trough from the hogs and permit the person feeding or cleaning the trough to have uninterrupted control of the same, as shown in Fig. 4.
For holding the trough and guard-board in theirtwo positions the following devices are employed: A top cross bar 12 is connected to the tops of the two end frames 11 and near the middle has two blocks 23 23, between which is pivot-ed a gravity-latch 15, whose shouldered end hangs down past the crossbar 12. On the back side of the trough there is rigidly fixed an upwardly projecting notched arm 3, which both serves as a handle to turn the trough by and also a locking-arm vwith which there engages a spring-latch 4 on the guard-board. When the trough is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 3 for feeding, the spring-latch 4 locks behind the notch of the arm 3 and holds the parts in this position, andwhen the trough and guard-board vare in the position shown inFig. 4 then the guard-boardis caught and heldby the gravity-latch 15, so as to cut oif access of the hogs IOO vided with a swinging guard-board arranged to pass from one side of the trough to the other, and I make no broad claim to this.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Afeed-trough comprising a trough hung upon pivots at the center of its ends so as to have a rotary adjustment, and a guard hung about pivots at the middle of its ends immediately above the trough, so as to be reversible, said trough and guard having locking devices coperating with each other to hold the parts in their proper positions substanf tially as described.
2. A feed-trough, comprisinga trough hung about centers at its ends, so as to have a rotary adjustment, and having also a projecting arm acting as a manipulating-handle and also as a locking device, and a guard hung about centers at its ends above the trough and having a spring-latch engaging the locking-arm of the trough substantially as described.
3. Afeed-trough, comprising a trough hung about centers at its endsso as to have a rotary adjustment and having also a projecting arm acting as a manipulating-handle and also as a locking device, a guard hung about centers at its ends above the trough and having a spring-latch engaging the locking-arm ofthe trough, upright end frames with a cross-bar at the top, and a gravitycatch on said crossbar adapted to engage and hold the guard substantially as described.
4. A feed-trough comprising a platform 14 with sills 13, 13, upright end frames 11, 11, mounted thereon and having cross-bar 12 at the top and lower cross-bar 24 at the bottom next to the platform, a trough hung on a horizontal axis between the end frames, and a guard board also hung between the end frames on a horizontal axis, and locking devices for holding the trough and guard in two positions as described.
