UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SNELL CHENHALLS, OF PLYMOUTH, ENGLAND.
OIL-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 705,820, dated. July 29, 1902. Application iiled February 28, 1902. Serial No. 96,168. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that LJOHN SNELL OEENHALLS, engineer, a subject of the King of England, residing at 59 Ebrington street, nPlymouth, in the county of Devon, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, and for which I have applied for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 26,142, led December 2l, 1901.
This invention relates to an improved oilburner for heating generators and the like.
It consists of a device in which the oil is mingled with exhaust-steam or other waste heat and conducted to the flame of a pilotburner, and thus heated before bein g burned,
as will be hereinafter described. Theseva-` pors or gases contain a considerable quan tity of thermal energy, which I propose to utilize in the presentinvention.
Theinvention is illustrated upon the accompanyingdrawing, which shows the burner,
in elevation, part section.
The hydrocarbon is fed to the `burner through a pipe ct, having a check-valve f, as shown. This pipe ct is connected to a pipe b by means of a T-piece, and through thel pipe b exhaust-steam or other waste heat (such as furnace-gases) is admitted. The pipe b is passed through the casing 7i of a generatori and within the same is formed into a coil c, which, after extending into the generator ,for
liminarily vaporizedfor instance, by heating the pipe by means of the exhaust or some portion of the exhaust or otherwise.
The exhaust-steam supplied to the pipe b may bersuperheated or dried in any ordinary manner before reaching the union with pipe ct.
The exhaust-steam or other waste heat is admitted into pipe b, carries along with it a mixture of oil or oil-vapor from the pipe a into the coil c and the coil c, andthe mixture is burned at the nozzle or burner proper, d. It will be seen that the coils c and'e are arranged about the zone of the flame of the burner, which consequently heats the mixture in the coils before it is burned.
The piped after being formed into a coil within the generator may be brought directly back to the nozzle d without forming a second coil. Further, the coils c e may extend to and around the pilot-burner g, if desired.
The oxygen of the steam combines with the carbon of the oil and hydrogen thus liberated burns together with'the hydrogen in the oil together giving a very hot ilarne as is well known. p
l `Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as such, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
p. `In combination, an oil-pipe, an exhaustpipe, a connection between the said pipes, a check-valve in said connection closing toward the oil-pipe, a pipe c connecting with the exhaust-steam pipe b and comprising inner and outer coils, the outer coil having avapor-discharge nozzle arranged to discharge vapor centrally through the coil, substantially as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
l JOHN SNELL CHENHALLS.
