UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BABE SANDLE, OF THOMPSON, MISSISSIPPI.
WEEDING IMPLEM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 704,120, dated July 8, 1902. Application filed March 20, 1902. Serial No. 99,200. (No model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BABE SANDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thompson, in the county of Amite,State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W'eeding Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to weeding implements; and it has for its object to provide an implement for clearing out weeds between cotton rows or rows of other crops, and to providea construction wherein the depth of the furrow formed by the weeder may be Varied. r
A further object of the invention is to provide means for holding the parts firmly in their various positions,-and to provide for various adjustments to suit different conditions under which the implement may be used.
In the drawings forming a portion of the specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing an implement constructed according to thepresent invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the implement. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and passing longitudinally through the standard and transversely through the beam.
Referring now to the drawings, the present implement comprises a beam 5, which at the rear end is provided with upwardlyand rearwardly diverging handles 6 after the manner of an ordinary plow, and at the forward end of the beam is a clevis 8 for attachment of a team.
Depending from the under side of the beam 5 is a web 9, provided with a number of transverse openings 10, and engaged with the beam and over this web portion is a standard 12, consisting of a metalplate which is bent upon itself and is disposed with the bight upon the upper side of the beam, the sides of the plate being perforated to receive a bolt 16,which is also passed through one of the perforations in the web, so as to hold the standard against displacement longitudinally of the beam.
The sides of the plate forming the standard 12 are held in spaced relation by a spacingblock 17 at the lower ends thereof, and between the sides of the plate is passed bolt 18, which is engaged with the Weed-cutting blade 19,which is in the form ofa triangle with its obtuse angle disposed downwardly and its base upwardly, the bolt being engaged with the blade adjacent to the base, and by sliding the bolt longitudinally of the standard the blade may be raised or lowered. To brace the outer ends of the blade, arms 20 and 21 are engaged therewith and are curved inwardly and are provided with terminaleyes, which are engaged with a bolt 23 passed through the standard, the braces being of spring metal' to permit of adjustment of the blade. The bolt 23 has also a brace 24 engaged therewith, said brace having an eye at one end which is disposed between the side plates of the standard and through which eye the bolt is passed, this brace being taken rearwardly and upwardly and secured to the under side of the beam. By adjusting the upper end of the standard longitudinally of the beam, which is permitted by the perforated Web of the beam and the pivotal engagement of the brace with the standard, the angle between the standard and the beam may be changed, so that the blade will enter the ground to a greater or lesser degree, as will be understood, and to raise and lower the blade on this standard it is only necessary to shift the attachingbolt of the blade, as above described.
It will be understood that in practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- A weeding implement comprising a beam having a depending perforated web, a standard consisting of a plate bent upon itself and disposed to straddle the webwith its bight lying against the upper face of the beam, a bolt passed through the sides of the standard for engagement with the perforations of the web interchangeably, a second bolt passed through the sides of the standard below the first-named bolt, abrace secured to the beam and having its forward end engaged with the bolt between the sides of the standard, a
blade having a bolt passed therethrongh and between the sides of the'standard and hav- 5 ing a clam ping-nut for engagement with the rear edges of the standard to hold the blade at different elevations, and spring-arms attached to the ends of the blade and to the ends of the second bolt to hold the blade yield- 10 ably against pivotal movement and to permit of adjustment of the blade to different elevations.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on the 19th day of February, 1902. I5
BABE SANDLE.
