UNITED STATES 'PA-TENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. MOYER, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
COMBINED FIRE POKER AND TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,947, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed March 3, 1902. Serial No. 96,418. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whoml z5 may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES C. MOYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have made a certain new and useful Invention in a Combined Fire Poker and Tongs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being lhad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure lis a perspective View showing the jaws of the tongs open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device with the sleeve in section and the jaws of the tongs closed. Fig. 3 is a sids view-of the point of the device on a larger sca e.
This invention has relation to fire pokers and tongs, and has for its object the provision of a combined re tongs and poker of novel and efficient character.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the handle of my device, which is of cylindrical character and is branched or bifurcated at one end to form the jaws B of the tongs, the opposite end portion being doubled or bent upon itself to form an eye by which the device may be suspended and the extremity of such end forming a stopshoulder d.
C is a sleeve closely fitting uponthe cylindrical handle of my device in a slidable and rotatable manner, such sleeve having sufficient length to press uponthe jaws of the tongs to close the same as it is slid upon the handle, such jaws being received in the sleeve, which abuts at the limit of its forward movement against lateral shoulders h l) of the jaws B, when the spring-jaws will be converted into a rigidrodi These jaws open automatically, being of spring character, and close to solid two-part bar, their inner faces The end portions better poking and form a being of planular nature. of the tongs are pointed for prying effect and have a sufficient enlargement to bring their surfaces flush with the convex superficies of the operating-sleeve when abutting thereagainst. The sleeve C is provided with a longitudinal slot c, engaging a pin c of the handle Aproper, such slot being offset at its rear end at c2, into which offset the pin is moved when the-sleeve is at the limit of its forward movement to lock it in position ywith the jaws of the tongs closed. This sleeve is preferably of polished character for more convenient manipulation.
Having thus described'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
. 1. The combined Iire tongs and poker, comprising the bar having spring bifurcations at one end portion thereof, and the slidable sleeve adapted to inclose and convert said bifurcations into a rigid rod, substantially as specified.
2. The combined lire tongs and poker, comprising the bar having spring bifurcations at oneend portion thereof, the slidable sleeve adaptedto inclose and convert saidibifurcations into a rigid rod, and means for locking said sleeve in position at the limit of its forward movement, substantially as specified.
3.` The combined ire tongs and poker, comprising the bar having spring bifurcations provided with end portions adapted to come together to form a solid end, and having stopshoulders, the slidable sleeve for closing said bifurcations, and-abutting at the limit of its forward movement against said stop-shoulders, substantially as specied.
4. The combined iire tongs and poker, comprising the bar having the spring bifurcations at one end and the handle extension at the opposite end portion, the slidable sleeve adapted to inclose and convert said bifurcations into a rigid rod, and having an elongatedislot and4 a pin connection with said bar, said slot having a locking-odset at onev end, substantially as specified'.
In testimony whereof I afx-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. MOYER. Witnesses:
LOUIS KRIEOHBAUM, CHAs. IVI. DnwnIN.
