DANIEL F. MORGAN, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
HAN D-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 703,21 1, dated June 24, 1902.
Application filed April 14, 1902. Serial No. 102,841. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas, and in the State of Ohio, haveinventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of protectors for the hands as is used in warm or mild weather by motormen and other workmen whose employment exposes the palm portion of the hand and thumb to violent or hard usage, or may be worn over a glove or mitten in cold Weather and which may also be used as a pad or glove by ballplayers; and it consists of a single piece of leather or other suitable material having slits and holes cut therein for the insertion of the hand, thumb, and fingers.
My invention relates more particularly, however, to the peculiar formation of the blank thereof and the novel arrangement and cutting of the slits and holes therein, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a protection for the hands, and more particularly the palm portion thereof and that portion of the thumb exposed to hard usage, that will be absolutely devoid of seams and welts and not equipped with the usual straps and buckles for securing the same to the hand, which have heretofore been found necessary in that class of handwear, and that will be strong, durable, and easy and cheap of manufacture.
A further object of my invention is to provide a hand-protector that is admirably adapted to be used as a base-ball pad and which may also be used as a protector of the knuckles in bag-punching by reversing the mode of wearing the said pad, so as to have the main portion thereof cover the knuckles and the strap or band extend around the fore part of the wrist.
band with my protector thereon.
WVhile the essential features of my invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, the preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a front perspective view of a Fig. II is a back perspective view of the same, and Fig. III is a plan View of the blank thereof.
In the drawings, A represents'the blank of my improved protector, the sides of which taper sightly inwardly in their downward c'ourse, thus making the lower portion thereof of less diameter than the upper or wrist portion. The upper and lower portions of the blank are preferably formed with the slightlyconvex edges 1 and 2. Near the upper edge of the blank A and in a line parallel therewith is provided the transverse and upwardlycurved slit or elongated slot a, which terminates on either side at points near the angles formed by the upper and side edges of the said blank, thus forming the strap or band I) for retaining the same on the hand. If it is desired, the slit a may be shorter than the one shown in the drawings and may then be extended by the wearer as he may see fit to properly adjust the protector to his hand. To one side of the said blank and near the upper edge thereof is provided the vertically-dis posed curved slit 0 for the insertion of the thumb, the said slit extending upwardly and inwardly and forms the tongue 0 for the protection of the palm portion of the thumb.
Near the lower edge of my protector I provide the openings or apertures d, of various sizes, which are four in number and arranged in a slightly outwardly-curved line. I prefer these openings or apertures d when the protector is to be worn on the bare hand or over a glove; but if it is desired to Wear the same over a mitten, as is often done by motormen or other persons exposed to the cold, the divisions between the said openings may be cut away on the dotted lines 00 50, thereby providing the blank with an elongated and slightly-curved slot to receive the hand with the mitten thereon, and also aids in forming the strap 6, that extends over the knuckles.
In using my said protector the hand is inserted through the slit a, the thumb in the slit 0 and theffingers in the openings or aper tures d or the elongated slot, as the case may be, in such manner as to bring the straps b and 6 over the back of the hand. The peculiar cutting of the slit a and the slitc and. their correlative position to each other form the short strap or bandf, which fits snugly around the heel of the thumb and prevents the downwardly-slipping tendency of the protector. It will therefore be readily seen that my invention may be used to protect the hands of motormen, linemen, &c., or as a base-ball mit or pad, and, if desired, it may be padded to suit the purpose to which it is applied, or by reversing the mode of wearing the same it may be used as a pad or protector of the knuckles in bag-punching.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new,and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. A hand-covering, comprising a single piece, and having near its upper edge a slit extending transversely thereof, near its inner and upper edges a slit at an angle to said transverse slit, and provided with a series of apertures near its lower edge, substantially as described.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a single piece of leather or other material, said piece having an outwardly-curved transverse slit near its upper edge and an outwardlycurved vertical slit near one end of said transverse slit and forming a tongue, and being provided with a series of openings of various sizes near its lower edge, substantially as described.
3. A hand-covering comprising a single piece and being provided at its lower portion with a series of openings for the insertion of the lingers, and a slit in its upper outer portion for the insertion of the thumb, and havingits upper portion cut to form a strap in a single piece and integral with the said handcovering at each end, substantially as described.
4. A protector for the palm portion of the hand comprising a single piece of material having its lower and upper portions cut to form openings for the insertion of the hand,
said out portions forming straps, and having a slit near its inner and upper edges for the insertion of the thumb, substantially as described.
5. A hand-covering comprising a single rectangulanpiece of leather or other material conforming to the shape of the palm portion of the hand, said piece having the slots a and 0 cut therein and the openings (Z in its lower portion, one of said slots being cut to form the integral strap Z).
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
