(Application led Apr. 29, 1901.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
.IOHN B. SCHMIDT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. i
SIGN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,863, dated June 17, 1902.
Application led April 29, 1901. Serial No. 58,105. (No model.)
T0 all wir/07771 t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. SCHMIDT, a eltizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in signs; and the main object of my invention is the provision of a sign which is adapted to be secured upon the corner of a window or building and to be provided with a transparent face, upon which the sign is painted or otherwise designed, the characters thereof being visible in daylight and by means of a light upon the inside of the casing are made visible at night.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a simple, durable, and inexpensive construction of illuminated sign which is ornamental and thoroughly practical in use.
To obtain the desired objects, my invention consists of a sign embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
In the drawings, Figure lis the front elevation of a display-sign made according to my invention. Fig. 2 is the rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the removable sign-top reversed. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bottom and sides of the sign. Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view of the metallic frame for the front of the sign.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the bottom of the sign, which is provided with a curved front side B and a zigzag rear edge C,
it being clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. Connected with the ends of the bottom and continuing upright therefrom are the inclined sides D, and connected to the rear edge of the bottom are the plates or sheets E, which form the back of the signcasing, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and provide an angular space substantially the same shape as the rear edge of the bottom A, so as to allow the sign to fit upon the corner of a building. Secured upon the outside of the sides D by means of the turn-over edges or flanges Q is the metallic frame P, it being held in such a manner as to provide spaces between the outer faces of the sides of the casing and the frame, so that a sheet H of glass or suitable transparent material carrying the sign can be properly secured in the casing, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 5. Adapted to t over the upper edge of the glass H, the
metallic frame P, and the sides D and rear of the casing, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2, is the top J, whose body is substantially the same shape as the bottom A and is provided with the .downwardly-projecting flange or rim K, as shown in Fig. 3. Secured to and depending from the under side of the top is an angular mirror or reflector M, in which is secured an 'electric light or bulb N, whose electrical connection enters from the top through the opening M', as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Carried by the top J, upon the forward edge thereof, is an ornamental top piece O, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident thatI provide an illuminated sign which may be constructed entirely of galvanized sheet-iron; but I prefer to make the bottom and top of wood and the front of glass and the remainder of galvanized sheet-iron, thus providing a simple and durable construction of sign which is very useful and practical.
I claiml. The herein-described sign consisting of the bottom having a zigzag rear edge and the segmental front edge, sides D secured to the outer rear edge of the bottom and extending upward therefrom, a metallic frame provided with a large rectangular opening and having turn-over edges upon its sides, said frame having its lower edge and turn-over edges engaging to the segmental front edge of the bottom and the front edges of the sides and providing a space between the edges of the side and turn-over edges, a convex sheet of glass fitting upon the bottom, and in said space and back of the opening in the frame, back sheets E secured to the rear edge of the bottom and the rear edge of the sides, a top fitting upon said frame sides and sheets consisting of the base, the downwardly-extending edges to surround said above-mentioned parts, and an illuminator carried by the lower side of the top.
2. A sign consisting of a bottom having a zigzag rear edge and a segmental front edge, sides secured to and extending upward from the outer edges of the rear, two back sheets IOC secured to and extending upward from the l terial carrying a sign heid in place by the remainder of the bottom and secured to the metallic frame, a reflector seouredto the unsides, said sides and beek being the same der sideof the top, and en iiiuminator carried height, ametal plate of substantially the same by the reflector. 15
5 Shape as the bottom, overlapping edges or In testimony whereof I affix my signature anges carried by said plate and adapted to in presence of two Witnesses.
surround or overlap the upper ends of the 1 back and sides to form a, top for the sign, a, JOHN B' SCHMIDT' metal frame having curved upper and lower Witnesses:
1o pieces and anged sides engaging the bottom HENRY C. ALBERS, and sides, a curved sheet of transparent ma- GEORGE ENGELKE.
