SUPPORTING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,398, dated June 17, 1902.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EVA M. BOWYER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in supporting devices, and more particularlya supporting device designed to afford attachment for an article to an article of apparel, such as a belt or the like.

The device while useful for many other purposes is herein shown as a means for attaching an umbrella to the person, thereby permitting the wearer, if a lady, to care properly for her skirts when in cars, on crowded streets, or in stores or the like. Heretofore owing to the, lack of some simple and inexpensive means for attaching the umbrella to the person when not in use such articles have been frequently laid down while shopping or in cars and as a result have been lost.

The object of this invention is to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and attractive hanger adapted to be adjustably secured. upon a ladys belt and adapted to permit an umbrella, parasol, or other desired article to be secured thereto, thereby leaving the hands of the user free. I I

The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described, and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing a device embodying my invention applied to a ladys belt as the same may ordinarily be worn. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the same, showing the shade or umbrella in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a View of the hanger, showing the same detached from the belt and in its openposition.

Obviously, if preferred, one of the members of said glove-button may be secured upon the belt itself and the other the complemental members 0 c of'which are secured at opposite ends of each strip, as shown in Fig. 3, so that when said ends are brought together, as shown in Fig. 2, a slight pressure acts to close said buttons and to secure the article to the hanger. Said straps O G are preferably of elastic material, such as rubber webbing or the like, though, if preferred, leather or other material may be used.

The operation ofmyinvention is as follows:

WVhen the umbrella, shade, or other article is not in use, the same is laid in theposition indicated in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the straps or bands G C are brought around and secured tightly about the same, thereby acting to hold the umbrella or other article firmly therein and leaving-the hands of the wearer or user free. Should it be desired to use the article, the same may immediately be released from the hanger and, if preferred, the hanger detached from thebelt and placed in a pocket or elsewhere. .Ordinarily, however, the same may be retained upon the belt in position to return the article thereto when desired.
