Description

UNITED STATES:
PATENT OEELCE.
ERASMUS L. KEYES, oE HoPEDALE, ILLINOIS.
CHUTE-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,894, dated June 10, 1902.
To LZZ whom it maycolzcern.-
Be it known that I, ERASMUS L. KEYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Tazewell and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chute-Wagons; and I do declare the following to be 'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as' will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panyingdrawings., and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to con- 2 is a reduced plan of the wagon-bed, showing the inclinedbottom-pieces; and Figf is a plan of thedoor. .7'
`In the drawings, A represents my wagon, and B the elevator, the former having an ordinary box-bodyand the latter being of the usual construction. I pivot the bottom of ele- Vator to a frame C, attached to a platform D, and provide it.with'a sliding hopper E. .The latter may thus be kept out of theway until the wagon has got into position and then slid down, so as to underlapthebot'tom 'of the wagon, directly .under the outlet gate F.
This gate is made of two boards f f, connected by a hinge f', and a cross-piece f2, which is fast to one piece f, projects over the other and has at the end an open slot f3.
Gr is an elbow-latch which is swiveled to a piece f, so that alined with the gate it extends up through the slot and being turned at a right angle makes it rigid. The gate is then held tightly in Side grooves of thewagonbody. When it is wanted-to'jtake out the ,gate, the latchis simply alined with the, slot and the piece f2 pulled outwardly, when it will come out easily., K v
For the wagon body Yor box I make a false e Application led April 12, 1902. Serial No. 102,597. (No model.)
bottom, consisting' of the three pieces H, H, and'I," which are loose, inclined toward the gate', which may been eitheror both sides, and connected by cords:V with ar central crankshaft J. -I preferably connect the two oppositely-inclined boards l-IH by pivoted bows 7i and cordsh with the crank-shaft and the side-board II, whichvmay be used on veither sideof the wagon, with said shaft by means .of the'cordsei. Ihusvit will be seen that the inclination of the pieces H I-I I maybe increased or diminished according to the quantity of wheatA inthe wagon-body. 'The elevator and its appurtenances have been described, and shownin the drawings for the'purpose of illustrating clearly the use of my wagon in connection therewith.
By my invention it is unnecessary for the lfarmer to use bags, baskets, or any otherreceptaclefor his wheat in the course of transportation, as it is simply` pouredl into the wagon body or box, asi'itis donefrom an elevator int'o4 the .hold offa vessel, thnssaving much' valuabletiine and'greatly reducing the expense of handling grain. t
Havingxthus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desiifetoprotect by Letters Patent,lis"- 4 1 n p" y l. Y The box or body ofa" grain-wagon having a gate on onejor both sides, two oppositelyinclined end-bards' H and the `inclined side-board I, said boards being loose and their inclination Changeable. as .Sheng and described. n
p 2.", The combination with the, three part false bottom-H -H I,"of the vpivoted bows h, cords 7i e' and crank-shaft 1T, al1 arranged to operate as shown and described.
v 3. A wagon body or box having a threepart false bottom of which the side piece I is adapted to be used upon either side which happens to be next the elevator asdescribed In testimony whereof I aiiix Ymy"signatiire p in presence of two witnesses;
