KITE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,106, dated May 27, 1902. Application led February 14, 1902. Serial No. 94.060. (No model.)

Be it known that I, HUGHIE J. TRAINOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State 0f New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kites, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention comprises a kite having certain peculiarly-arranged whistles therein and a telephonie receiving device adapted to be held in the hand of a person dying the kite, these parts being connected by a cord, so that the noise of the whistles will be communicated to the receiver.

This specification is a specific description of one form of the invention, while the claims deiine the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure lis a perspective view of the device in use. Fig. 2 is an elevational view showing the kite and illustrating the receiver in section, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the whistles.

ct indicates the kite, which may be of anyV construction desired. On the kite is placed a reinforced section a', and to this part of the kite are fastened the whistles b. These Whistles are each provided with an air-tube h, as shown in Fig. 3, these tubes being formed with conical or funnel-shaped receiving ends Wand are arranged on the under side of the kite.

c indicates the kite string or cord, which is connected to the kite by the bridles c', and d indicates the receiver, which comprises a tube open at one end to be placed to the ear and having at the other end a diaphragm d". (See Fig. 2.) Within the tube is located the transverse pin cl2, to which the cord is attached. This tube or receiver serves not only as a means for receiving the vibrations of the cord c, but also as a reel on'which the cord may be Wound when drawing in the kite.

In using the invention the kite is flown in the usual manner, and when all the cord has been paid out the receiver is placed to the ear and then the noise of the Whistles will be transmitted to the receiver and may be distinctly heard by the operator. The whistles are surrounded by the current of air passing into the air-tube b and through the Whistles, which Whistles may be in themselves of any desired construction. If desired, the whistles may be of different tones, so that a musical chord may be transmitted. Also other forms of acoustical devices may be used in place of the Whistles.

Various changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of my invention may be resorted to at will Without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as may lie Within the scope of my claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv 1. The combination of a kite, an acoustical instrument attached thereto, a cord attached to the kite, and a telephonie receiver connect ed to the cord.

2. A kite having a Whistle attached thereto, and an air-tube of uniform interior diameter located at one side of the Whistle to .receive the currents of air and to deliver them to the whistle, said air-tube having therein at its receiving end an inwardly-projecting funnelshaped end piece.

3. The combination of a kite, an acoustical instrument attached thereto, acord connected to the kite, and a telephonie receiver attached to the cord, said receiver comprising a tube with a diaphragm therein, and an interior rod adapted to have the cord connected to it.
