Beit known that I, F. A..HANNAFORD, of the city, county, and State of- New York, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Safety-Bridles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear..

and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a portion, of this specification, which is a sideyiew, representing a bridle constructed according to my' invention, and showing thesane as applied for use.

The object of this invention is to provide a means whereby 'a vicious horse may be more e'liec'tuelly com trolled in driving than is found practicable with`- the devices hitherto adopted to secure the said result.

The invention consists in two supplemental straps, to which the reins are attached, and which are so co n' nected with the bridle or headstall, and with the bits thereof, that a moderate pull or draught upon-thc reins will lvery forcibly operato the bits, thus eii'eetnallychecking thelihorse.

I The invention further consists in providing the aforesaid supplemental straps with adjustable stops,'wher eby the peculiar action of such straps may be limited .in such manner that a uniform strain or tension may be maintained upon ,the bit, as required in speeding a horse upon thc,1 oad.

To enable others to understand the Construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawing. V

A indicates the headstall or bridle 4propenwhich may be of any ordinary or suitable construction. B shows the bit of the same, and a one of the rings, whereby the ends ofthe said bit are attached to the bridle. Placed upon each of the rings a is a metallic loop or link, b, the outer end of which may be furnished with a. small grooved friction-roller. Attached to the pole or top strap c ofthe bridle, one at each side of the said bridle, are two supplemental straps C, which extend downward, and are-passed through the' loops b of the rings a of the bit B, and to the lower extremities of which arebuckled or otherwise* fastened the reins shown in red outline in the figure.

By drawing or pulling upon the reins, the supplemental straps C will be drawn down and backward through thc loops aforesaid, and, as a consequence, will force the bit upward or back in the mouth of the horse with a much greater degree of force than would be possible if'the reins were attached directly to the rings a of the hit, and of course enabling the horseltobc controlled with a correspondingly increased degree of efiiciency;

In those cases where it is desired to carry this. increased action of the bit upon the mouthonly to a certain extent, as, for instance, in speeding a horse upon the road, each of the supplemental straps C is made in two parts, marked respectively c and f, and buckledtogether, as, shown at a', the lower partfbeing furnished, near its (ind, with u. rilig,f*, of such size that it cannot pass or be drawn through thc adjacent loop Zz of the hit, and which servos as a stop to prevent the strain or draught oivtlre reins from drawing thc straps G through the said loops beyond a certain limit, and this limit being reached by pulling upon the reins, as h'ereinbefore set forth. The rings a striking the loops b, limit the further movement of the supplemental straps C through the loops aforesaid, and cause the reins to act directly upon the bit, somewhat in the same manner as when attached thereto in the usual way, thus enabling a continuous and uniform pressure of thc bit to be exerted upon the horses month, by adjusting, through the agency of the buckle a', the lower parts j' of the strap C higher or lower, as the case may require.v The rings orstopsfk maybe so placed as to limit the movements of the supplemental straps, and consequently the pressure exerted by the bit upon the mouth o f the horse, to any desired degree.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is

1. The supplemental straps C, arranged upon the bridle A, and in relation with the bit B thereof, substantially as end for the purpose specified.

2. The stops f*, made' adjustable upon the supplemental straps G, substantially asset forth, whereby the l force exerted upon the bit may be limited and rendered uniform, as described.V
