UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEZEKIAH HOWE, OF OLEAN, NE\V YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRED F. HARRIS, OF SCIO, NEW YORK.
ANTIFRICTION ROLLER-BEARING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.7 00,201, dated May 20, 1902.
Application filed July 17,1901.
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, HEZEKIAH Hows, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented newand usefullmprovements in Antifriction Roller Bearings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to roller-bearin gs; and the object of the same is to construct a device of this class which will run without oil and in which friction shall be reduced to a minimum. The simpleand novel construction by which this is accomplished is fully described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a j ournal-box containing my improved bearing. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the top removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail of one of the rollers. Fig. 5 is a detail of one of the carrier-rings.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates a journal-box comprising alower section 2 and an upper section 3. The box 1 has sides 4, cut away at 5 on the arc of a circle, thereby forming semicircular flanges, which form raceways for roller '6; The rollers 6 form a circular series and are journaled in a pair of parallel carrier-rings 7 These rings 7 have central apertures 8 therein and bear a series of peripheral semicircular notches 9, which embrace spindles 10,forn1ed on the ends of the rollers 6 by turning them. down and leaving circular disks 11 on the ends thereof. The width of the rings 7 is'such that the faces of the rollers 6 project beyond the edge of the apertures 8 in'position to serve as bearings for a, shaft 12 extending therethrough. Thedisks llare of the same diameter as the, body of=the rollers, and hence also contact with the shaft 12and form additional Serial No. 68,657. (No modal.)
. bearings for the same. The shoulders 13 adjacent to the spindles 10 are perfectly square and form guides for the rollers, equalize their movement, and hold them true with respect to the flanges 4, which form raceways for the same.
placing of a ring 7 at each end between the square shoulders equalizes the pressure and prevents all wabbling or lost motion, which would add to the friction and .soon destroy the bearing.
I do not wish to be limited as to details, as these maybe modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my in vention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a roller-bearing, the combination with a journal-box having a pair of circular flanges thereon, of a pair of carrier-rings having a series of semicircular notches in their peripheries, rollers each provided with a spindle and 'a disk on each end, said spindles being journaled in said notches and located to run on said circular flanges as raceways to keep the rollers clear from contact with the box, and
a shaft extendingthrough said rings and hearing wholly on said rollers, substantially as described.
HEZEKIAH HOWE.
