IMPROVEMENT IN GRAPPLING-IEONS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HAwLnY, of Utica, Oneida. county, New York, have invented `a new and useful Improvement in Grappling-Irons for suspending ropes, elevating blocks, andthe like; andl I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, and of the mode of opcration of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which- Figurel represents a perspective view of the invention.

A A are the arms, A1 the joint on which they turn, B B the bars or levers, an d B B and B2 the pins of the togglejoint; C, a hook; D, the elevating and detaching apparatus, having arms D D and ahoolr, D2, and
all attached tol D", the pole. E, the beam to which the grappleis attached. The arms A A are\jpinted at their lower end A1, and are curved out-ward and then inward at their points, in such manner -that said points may most readily take hold ofthe beam to which they are -to'be attached. They may be ofeast malleable or wrought' iron. At about the point where the arms are the farthest apart is the toggle-joint B, connecting the two arms, composed of two bars or levers B B, gne end of each of which is joined to` an arm, A, by a pin, B, and the other ends of said levers are joined to each other by the centre-pin or bolt B2. Between these fwo ends is placed the end of' the hook C, through which said pin or bolt B2 also passes. This hook C extends down below the joint Al. By drawing or pressing up the hook C the grapple is opened and closed. The elevating and 4`lletuching,apparatus consists of a pole, D3, and a. T-formed piece of iron, D, attached to the upper end thereof.
The upper arms Dl Dl are curved inward and upward, as seen in figs. 1 and 3, and the lower'end is formed into a hook, and turned at right angles across the pole, as is also seen in figs. 1 and 3.
AThe mode ci' operation is as follows: It is obvious that if the points of the arms A A are placed cach one' on opposite sides of a timber, and a weight suspended from the hook C, the togglejoint B will draw down the parts together and cause them to adhere to the timber, the firmer the greater the suspended weight. It is also obvious that when the toggle-joint B is forced up, :is'it may be by pressing up C, it will cause the armste open and release them from the timber. If the position to which the irons are to be raised is too high'to be reached by band, the lower end of the grnpples may be placed in the elevatingr apparatus, the arms Dl D in front, and the lower end of C resting in the llook Dz, as seen in iig. 1, and with the pole the grapples, blocks, and ropes may be elevated to the desired point, when, by swinging the ropes to the left, ythe hook C will pass out of the hook D2, and, the weight of the pulley-bloeks and ropes being allowed to operate on the toggle-joint through the hook C, will cause the grapples to close on the timber. When the grapples are to be lowered the elevating apparatus is placed in the position lit was when the grapple's were raised, and the heck D, being pressed up against the curve of the hook C, presses up the toggle-joint and the grapples are released from the timber, when they may be lowered.
This form oi grappling-irons is simpler, cheaper, stronger, and more easily operated than any in use hitherto. y y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the arms A A, toggle-joint B, and bock C, constructed and operating substantially as described and for the uses and purposes mentioned.
2. In combination with the grappling-irons the elevating and det-aching apparatus, constructed and oper-l ating substantially as described.
