SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,667, dated May 13, 1902. Application filed June 7, 1901- Serial No. 63,530. (No model.)
To all 1077,0721, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER T. DRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawing Mechanism for Mixing-Machine Vehicles or the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved concrete-mixing machine of that type adapted to be propelled or drawn from place to place and deliver the material at desired points for use.
The invention has for a primary object the arrangement of a novel means for moving the vehicle, comprising an arrangement of ropes or cables secured at their outer ends at predetermined points intermediate which the vehicle is designed to travel and cooperating with suitable instrumentalities on the vehiole, so that when operated in one or anotherdirection they willcause the vehicle to be drawn either forward or backward.
Theinvention alsoembracesimproveddriving means and connections for operating the ropes and cables.
Improved details in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the apparatus will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter and the appended claims when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.
In the drawings a preferable embodiment of the invention is illustrated for the mere sake of assisting in giving a clear understanding of the invention, and when hereinafter referring to the same like reference characters will designate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mixer-vehicle provided with the improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detailed views of the clutch.
Referring more specifically t0 the drawings, A designates a vehicle-platform of any suitable or preferred construction, and B the conveying-wheels therefor, designed to travel upon either smooth or tracked surfaces, as may be found expedient.
Occupying a central position on the platform A to one side thereof is an engine or motor O, a steam-engine being shown in this instance and receiving its source of energy through suitable piping 0, connected to the steam-dome of a boiler D, located at one end of the vehicle.
E represents a mixer of any desirable type supported at the opposite end of the mixer, so as to counterbalance the weight of the boiler, and d is the main driving-shaft for the mixer-blades. At the inner end of this driving shaft is a sprocket-wheel d in communication with a corresponding sprocket d on the engine-shaft d through the medium of a sprocket-chain 03 By this arrangement the mixer may be operated directly from the engine, suitable clutch mechanism, which is not of the gist of this invention, being employed to throw the mixer-operating shaft into and out of operative connection with the gearing.
Between the engine and boiler are twin standards or uprights e c, supporting revoluble grooved Winding-drums E, around which passes an operating rope or cable F, the ends f f of which pass downward through the floor or platform of the vehicle over guide-rollers g g, the latter projecting downward below the platform of the vehicle into close proximity with the ground, that a more direct pull may be had thereupon and extended in opposite directions to desired points in rear or upward of the machine, whence they are securely fastened to dead-men G in the road-bed. It will be apparentthat accordinglyas the drums are revolved in the one or other direction one of the operating-ropes will be correspondingly drawn upon and wound, While the other Will be relaxed and give out. The means for operating the drums may be now described.
It is desirablethat 'tho drumsoperate in unison, and to accomplish this sprockets h h are mounted upon their respective axles, they being connected by a chain I-I. Adjacent the innermost drum is supported a gear 2', meshing with a pinion 'i, rotatably mounted in the standard, its axle t carrying a relatively larger beveled friction-gear I, Fig. 2. This friction-wheel is in turn engaged by a friction-pinion K, rigidly secured to the side of a flanged casing K, rotatably mounted in uprights or standards The flanges Z l on the casing cooperate in forming a raceway L therein, into which projects a friction roller or clutch L, also rotatably mounted in one end of the standards 70 and an auxiliary standard 70 the extreme end of the axle thereof being provided with a gear m, connected to a corresponding gear m on the engine-shaft by a sprocket-chain M. The shaft N of the friction clutch or roller L is supported eccentrically in a sleeve n, journaled to rotate in the upper ends of the standards 70 and R The sleeve is formed with an eccentricallyarranged through passage or opening or, extending longitudinally thereof, and through this opening the axle N passes. An operating-lever 0, extending upwardly to a point within easy access of an operator, is rigidly secured to the sleeve, and through the medium of this lever, as will be obvious, the sleeve may be revolved within the hearings in the standards 70 and 70 and accordingly as it is in one or the other direction its eccentric opening will be raised and lowered as the case may be and the axle of the friction clutch or roller correspondingly raised .or lowered into engagement with the outer or inner flanges Z Z of the raceway L on the easing K. By this arrangement a very simple means is provided for rotating the casing in either direction.
The manner of operating the rope or cable may now be understood. The desired motion being imparted to the axle of the friction roller or clutch through the medium of the sprocket-chain in communication therewith and the driving-shaft of the engine, the casing K is revolved in one direction according to the location of the friction-clutch and the friction -pinion extending laterally thereof correspondingly'revolved, whereupon the enlarged beveled friction-gear will be revolved. and through the pinion at the opposite end of its axle the drums will be operated through the gearing heretofore described.
While a special arrangement of the several parts of the apparatus have been described, it is to be understood that many changes and alterations maybe made without in the least departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.

2. The combination with a vehicle, of parallel shafts journaled above the body of said vehicle, drums fixed upon said shafts, a stationary cable a portion of which passes through the body of the vehicle and around said drums,gnide-rollers engaged by the cable suspended beneath the body of the vehicle, a power-shaft also journaled upon the body of the vehicle and parallel with said drumshafts, connections between said power-shaft and one of said drum-shafts for driving the latter, connections between said drum-shafts whereby the rotation of one effects the rotation of the other, a motor mounted upon the vehicle, power connections between said motor and said power-shaft, and means for reversing the direction of rotation of said powershaft whereby the vehicle may be propelled in either direction.
3. The combination with a vehicle, of parallel shafts journaled above the body of said vehicle, drums fixed upon said shafts, a stationary cable a portion of which passes through the body of the vehicle and around said drums,guide-rollers engaged by the cable suspended beneath the body of the vehicle, a power-shaft also journaled upon the body of the vehicle and parallel with said drum-shafts, connections between said power-shaft and one of said drum-shafts for driving the latter,connections between said drum-shafts whereby the rotation of one effects the rotation of the other, a stub-shaft rotating at right angles to said power-shaft with which it is operatively connected, a second stub-shaft parallel with the first stub-shaft, a motor mounted upon the vehicle and operatively connected to said second stub-shaft, and means interposed between said stub-shafts whereby the former may be rotated in either direction.
4. The combination with a vehicle,of standards mounted upon and projecting above the body thereof, shafts journaledin said standards, a power-shaft also journaled in said standards parallel with said first-mentioned shafts, speed-reducing gears between said power-shaft and said first-mentioned shafts, drums fixed upon said shafts, brackets secured to and depending below the body of said vehicle, guide-rollers journaled in said brackets, other guide-rollers between said shafts and said first-mentioned guide-rollers, and a stationary cable passing around said guide-rollers, through the body of the vehicle and around said drums a plurality of turns.
