MARY OSBON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
HAT OR DRESS FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,559, dated May 6, 1902.
Application filed September 13,1900.
T0 (LZZ whom, if; ntay concern:
Be it known that I, MARY OsBON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladies Hat or Dress Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat and dress fasteners; and one of its objects is to provide a device of this character which will have the appearance of a row of buttons when applied to the front of a dress-body to hold the same closed, which will render a dress-body easy to fasten and unfasten, and which will readily conform to the figure of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is the construction of the fastener device which makes it applicable to bats and which when applied to a hat will prevent the latter from shifting or skewing around on the wearers head.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View of a dress-body provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of a portion. of the meeting vertical edges of a garment fastened togetherwith my device. Fig.3 is a front View ofaportion of the fastener. Fig. 4is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical sectional View of a hat with the fastener ap-. plied thereto. Fig. 7 is a detail view of a modified form of hook used in connection with the fastener.
Referring to the drawings, a designatesa strip of flexible material stamped with a row of bead-like heads or button-heads b, which are hollow and of convex shape, standing out from the flat body portion 0 of the flexible strip and are contiguous to each other, there by simulating a row of buttons placed closely together. The flat body portion 0 of the said flexible strip extends along each side of the row of button-heads and is provided along its edges and between the button-heads b with two series of apertures d (1, each of which series is availed of for the engagement of any suitable attaching means to secure the said strip a to the vertical meeting or lapping edges of a garment. For instance, the

series of apertures (1 along one edge of the strip a may be availed of for detachably or permanently attaching one edge of the said strip to a vertical edge of a garment, While the series of apertures d along the other edge of said strip receives at desired intervals one of the prongs of a twop ronged hook e. The other prongs of said hooks take in the other vertical edge of the garment, and thereby hold the said two edges together. As shown at f, Fig. 2, ornaments are preferably attached to the said hooks to conceal the same and to add to the appearance of the fastener.
The flexibility of the strip a allows it to readily conform to a wearers figure, as indicated in Fig. 1, and the button-heads in no wise interfere with the curving of the strip and cause it to possess the same general appearance when it is curved that it possesses when straight.
Fig. 6 illustrates the fastener applied to a hat 9. The flexible strip a is sewed or otherwise secured by one edge around the inside of the hat-crown at the lower edge thereof. With this arrangement of the flexible stripe I may employ two hooks h, located at diametrically opposite points of the hat, each hook having two prongs 1' extending toward each other and joined together by a springcoil portion j. One of the prongs i takes in one of the apertures 01' along that edge of the flexible strip a which is unattached to the hat-crown, and the other prong engages the wearers hair.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a hat and dress fastener comprisinga flexible strip provided with a row of hollow, convex button-heads, contiguous to each other, whereby to simulate a row of buttons placed closely together, and also having a body portion provided along each edge with a series of apertures each series adapted to receive suitable attaching means, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A dress-fastener, comprising a flexible strip provided with a row of hollow, convex button-heads contiguous to each other, and also provided along each edge with a series of apertures; means engaging the apertures In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

said hooks taking in the opposing edge of the garment, as and for the purpose set forth.
