Be it known that I, HENRY FITZROY .WEBB,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at Cou-v to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled IO in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to means of novel construction for closing a jar, bottle, or like vessel and securing the closure when in place.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and alsoto acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective View of the upper portion of a jar embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is aside View thereof. Fig. 3 is a top view. Fig. 4c is a perspective viewof the upper end of the jar, the closure being removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the closure as seen from the inner side. Fig. 6 is a detail section. Fig. 7 is a View similar to Fig. 6, on

Oorresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated 0 in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The jar, bottle, or other receptacle 1 may be of any form and size and is provided near its mouth with an outer rib or flange 2,notched at diametrically opposite points, as indicated at 3, to admit of the bent ends 4 of the Wire fastener 5 passing by the rib or flange 2 when placing said fastener in position or when removing it from the receptacle. The notches 3, provided near the upper endof the jar at opposite points,are adapted to receive projections 7 at the inner side of the closure 8 to prevent turning of said closure when fitted to the jar or receptacle.
The closure 8 may be of glass, porcelain, or other material and has the form of a cap, the rim 9 being constructed upon its inner side to embrace the rib 2 and end portion of the jar or receptacle projecting beyond the said rib. A rubber gasket or like packing-ring is interposed between the closure 8 and upper end of the jar to make a tight joint and hermetically seals the jar or package when the closure is fitted thereto and properly secured by the fastener 5. The top side of the closure or cap 8 is formed to provide cam portions 11 and 12, upon which the end portions of the wire fastener 5 ride, so as to press the cap or closure tight upon the receptacle. The faces of the cam portions 11 and 12 extend to about one-half of the closure, and a shoulder 13 is formed at the beginning of one cam and at the rear end of the other cam, and these shoulders 13 are diametrically disposed and constitute stops to properly position the fastener 5 when fitting the closure to the receptacle. A pair of studs 14 is located about at the center of the cap and receives between them the horizontal portion of the fastener 5, and these studs serve to hold the fastener in proper position when turning it either to tighten or to loosen the cap. The studs 14:, as well as the interlocking projections '7, are formed with the cap or closure.
The wire fastener 5 is of bail form, the hori .zontal portion being adapted to extend over or other receptacle embodying the invention, the cap is placed thereon in such a manner as to admit of the interlocking projections 7 entering the notches 3 after the bent terminals 4 of the wire fastener have passed therethrough, after which the fastener is turned, the cap being held from turning by the interlocking parts 3 and 7. As the fastener is turned it rides upon the cam portions 11 and 12 of the closure and forces the latter tightupon the receptacle and at the same time prevents displacement thereof. The camfaces 11 and 12 being of very slightinclination and the friction between the wire fastenerand the cap and the rib 2 being comparatively great, alltendencyof the wire fastener to slip when released is wholly obviated and security assured.
In Fig. 8 a different form of closure is shown, the central part entering the mouth of the jar and the offstanding annular rim projecting over the edge thereof, the other parts being substantially the same as herein tioned cam portions of the closure, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a jaror like receptacle having an outer rib or flange at its upper end and having notches in said flange at diametrically opposite points, a closure having oppositely-disposed cam portions upon its outer or top side, interlocking projections forming a part of the closure and adapted to enter the aforesaid notches when theclosure is in place, and a fastener of bail form provided with bent terminals to pass through the notches of the aforementioned rib and adapted to have its horizontal portion ride upon the cam portions of the closure, substantially as specified.
3. In combination, a jar or like receptacle having an outer rib or flange at its upper end notched at diametrically opposite points, a closure having interlocking projections to enter the said notches of the rib and having a pairof centrally-disposed studs upon its outer or top side and having oppositely-disposed cam portions, and a fastener of bail form having its horizontal portion fitted between the said studs and adapted to have its bent terminals pass through the notches of the aforementioned rib and engage under the latter, substantially as set forth.
