PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO H. J.
UTENSIL FOR DISPLAY OF GOODS.
SBECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,943, dated April 29, 1902.
Application filed May 24, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE N. I-IEINZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvementsin Utensils for Display of Goods, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in utensils for cooking and warming articles of food, the. While the improved utensil can be used for general purposes, it is especially designed for i use by salesmen to display the character and quality of goods in condition for use to purchasers. In general terms the invention consistsin the construction and combination hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved utensil. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line II II, Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views illustrating modifications of my improvement.
In the practice of my invention the main receptacle or vessel 1 is divided into two or more compartments or chambers a b, &c., by a partition or partitions 2, extending transversely of the vessel. Each of these compartments is provided with covers 3, preferably hinged to the partition or partitions. These covers or lids are preferably provided with flanges 4, which fit snugly against the side walls of the compartments when the covers are closed. The portions 4 of the flanges along the hinge edges of the covers are inclined or otherwise so shaped that when the covers are closed the free edges of these portions 4 will bear against the adjacent side wall of the compartment. ,In order to prevent the slopping out of the liquid portions of the goods, one or more of the compartments may be formed with inwardly-projecting ledges 5 along their upper edges.
The vessel or receptacle 1 is supported within a larger vessel 6 by any suitable means, as an outwardly-projecting flange 7 adapted to rest upon the edge of the larger vessel 6.
two vessels.
Serial No. 61,799- (No modelcured together, or the receptacle 1 may be detachably secured in position by any suitable means-as, for example, by a rod 8 having its lower end'attached to the vessel 6 and extending up through a partition of the receptacle 1. A clamping device, as the nut 9, engages the upper end of the rod and bears upon the partition of the receptaclel. On both constructions the joint between the two vessels should be made tight to prevent the escape of water from the space between the The outer vessel is provided with a filling-spout 10, which is closed by a suitable stopper, as the internally-threaded cap 11. The filling-spout should connect with the vessel above the normal Water-level, so that water will not be forced out by steam generated in the Water-space, which should have a steam-outlet. This outlet can be formed bya perforation 12 in the cap 11. A water-gage consisting of a glass tube 13, with tubular metal end pieces 14, is secured to the outer vessel in proper position to show the level of the water in said vessel.
Suitable supporting-legs 15 are secured to the outer vessel to permit of the placing of a suitable heater 16 under the outer vessel.
This heater, which may be an alcohol-lamp,
is preferably arranged on a seat 17, connected to the vessel by arms 18. v
In using this utensil two or three kinds of goods-as soup, baked beans, tomatoes, &c. can be placed in the several compartments of the vessel 1. The tight-fitting covers will prevent the slopping out of the contents during transportation. firmly connected together andthe joint between is tight, the water in the space cannot spill out. When it is desired to display the goods, the lamp is lighted and the goods brought to the condition in which they would be used.
I claim herein as my invention- 1. A portable utensil for the display of arti cles of food, &c., having in combination a water-containing vessel, a vessel or receptacle having two or more compartments andsecu'red in position within the water vessel, independ- As the two vessels areent covers for said compartments, a carryinghandle and a lamp a seat secured to the outer vessel, substantially as set forth.
2. A portable utensil for the display of articles of food, &c., having in combination a water-containing vessel, a vessel or receptacle secured within and forminga tight joint with the water vessel and having twoor more compartments, independentcovers for said compartments, a carrying-handle secured -to the inner vessel, a filling-spout connected to the Water vessel and a lamp a seat secured to the outer vessel, substantially as set forth.
3. A portable utensil for the display of articles of food, 850., having in combination .a water-containing vessel, a vessel or receptacle detachably secured Within and sealing the Water vessel and having two or more compartments, independent covers for said comclosed, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
CLARENCE N. HEINZ.
