TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: h
v Be it known that I, LUCIUS C. CHASE, of Boston, in the county of Sniolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved Fastener for Horse-Blankets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawing, forminga part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and l Figure 2 a longitudinal section of the device as applied.
This improvement relates to a new method of fastening a horse-blanket across the chest of a horse, and` consists, first, in a peculiar metallic stud, fastened by rivets to the blanket; and, second, in looping together the two sides of the blanket by means of this stud and a slotted leather thong, also rivetted in a peculiar way to the blanket, the whole making a devicc cheaper, easier to operate than, and eoually eil'ective with, buckle or buttons.
In the drawings, A is a blanket, to be fastened together across a horses breast, for instance. Upon the two parts which are to be brought together by the fastening we attach at a a. a shield of leather. I then take a metallic casting, of the plan shown in rig` 1, b c @Land of the section shown in fig. 2, b c d, consisting of plate `b, stud c, and loop d, and attachthe sannel on the opposite side of the blanket from shield a by means of rivets e and f, passing through shield, blanket, andplate, and then upset. The stud c is of an elliptical shape, and is arranged so that its longest diameter shall be in the direction of-the strain to be brought to hear upon it. .lhe loop d may be omitted, but I prefer to make it as shown, continuons with the plate b, inclined at a small angle with said plate, and forming a sort of' standing loop for the strap. To make the other end of the fastening, I take a strap of leather, y, make a slot, h, in it, and fasten it to the blanket over shield a by rivets ef, passing'through shield, blanket, and strap, and twin washer j, of the plan shown in tig. 1, and then upset. The strap is fastened to the stud as shown in section, fig. 2, by slipping the slot h over stud c, and tucking strap g through-loop cZ.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' 1. The arrangement of stud c and plate b in connection with each other, and alsowith loop d, when fastened to a blanketbymeans of shield a and rivets e f, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. And in combination therewith, the strap Ag, slotted at h, when fastened to the blanket between shield d LUUIUS C. CHASE.
