\MTNEEE S' UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN P. HARRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO REED AND BARTON CORPORATION, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
INDIVIDUAL COMMUNION-SERVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 697,247, dated April 8, 1902. Application filed December 9,1901. Serial No. 85,216- (Ilo model.)
To to whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN P. HARRIS, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Individual Oommunion-Services,of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to. individual communion-services; and its primary object is to provide a tray or holder for services of the character indicated so constructed as to adapt it to receive wine-glasses and to permit the same to be removed therefrom without the clinking noise incident to the striking of glasses against the ordinary metallic tray or glass-holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tray or glass-holder for an individual communion-service so constructed as to support the wine-glasses in'rows at graduated elevations to facilitate their removal from the tray or holder.
The invention comprises a plate, disk, or tray of novel construction and a cover there for provided with openings to receive the glasses and means for preventing wabbling of the glasses or contact thereof with the walls of said openings.
The invention also consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described, and defined in the appended claims, in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the tray-receiver with the glasses removed. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same, showing glasses in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the tray with the cover removed; and Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section of the tray, on an enlarged scale, showing glasses in position therein.
The reference-numerall designates the rim of the plate or tray, preferably curved upward slightly, as shown, and formed at its inner edge with an annular shoulder 2, which serves as a rest for the cover, as will be referred to again hereinafter. The bottom of the plate or tray comprises a pluralityof concentric steps or platforms, four being shown I platforms in the drawings, designated, respectively, by the numerals 3, 4, 5, and 6 and connected by annular risers 7. From the central platform 5 of the tray projects a spool-shaped pedestal 8, formed with a central screw-threaded opening 9 to receive a screw 10, which secures the cover of the tray detachably and is provided with a serrated head 11 to facilitate the turning of the screw. Upon each of the annular 3, 4, and 5 is placed a ring 12, of celluloid or other suitable material, to serve as a pad for ,the' bottom of the glass to rest upon as best illustrated in Fig. 4. The cover of the tray is formed to correspond to the structure of the tray, and it comprises a plurality of annular steps or platforms 13,formed with openings 14, and a central platform 15, all connected by annular Webs or risers 16. The outer edge of the lower step 13 of the cover is bent downward to form an annular depending flange 17, adapted to rest upon the shoulder 2, and the central platform 15 of the cover is formed with an opening for the passage of the screw 10. To the under surface of the cover is secured a lining 18, of celluloid or like material, said lining conforming to the shape of thecover and being formed with openings registering with the openings 14, but of slightly smaller diameter than the latter, thus providing an annular pad or cushion 19 around each of the openings 14 to support the glasses therein. This lining constitutes the main characteristic feature of the invention,as the glasses are supported within the cover-openings by the celluloid lining in such a manner as to entirely avoid wabbling or contact with the metal walls of the coveropenings, thus enabling the glasses to be placed and removed without noise or liability of breakage.
The utility and advantages of the improved construction of tray will be obvious from the foregoing description.
While the pads 12 arranged within the tray are a desirable supplement to the cover-lining through which the glasses extend, their use is not essential, and they may, if preferred, be dispensed with.
The ready removability of the cover facilitates the cleansing of the tray and permits the renewal of the pads and cover-lining when necessary.
I claim- 1. An individual communion-service comprising a tray formed with a plurality of steps adapted to support the bottoms of the glasses, and a cover stepped to conform to the tray and formed with glass-receiving openings, and a lining for the cover formed with openings of less diameter than those in the cover, to support the glasses intermediate their ends.
2. An individual communion-service comprising a tray formed with steps, pads on said steps upon which the bottoms of the glasses rest, a removable cover stepped to conform to the tray and formed with openings, and a lining for said"cover having openings of less diameter than those in the cover.
3. An individual communion-service comprising a tray formed Witha plurality of steps or platforms, a removable cover for the tray provided with steps or platforms each having a row of openings, and a lining for said cover formed with openings of less diameter than the openings in the cover, but registering therewith to afford supporting-pads for glasses extending through said openings.
4. An'individual communion-service comprising a tray formed with a plurality of annular steps or platforms, and a central platform; a removable cover having, steps or platforms conforming to those of the tray and formed with glass-receiving openings, means for securing the cover upon the tray; pads resting on the tray-platforms, and a lining for the cover formed with openings registering with the openings of the coverbut of less diameter than the latter.
5. An individual communion-service comprising a tray having a plurality of steps or platforms, to support glasses, and a central platform, a cover having steps or platforms conforming to those of the tray and formed With glass-receiving openings, pads surrounding the tray-openings and a centrally-arranged screw for detachably securing the cover in position.
6. An individual communion-service 00111- prising a tray formed with annular steps or platforms, a central platform, and an annular shoulder; a cover having platforms conforming to those of the tray, glass-receiving openings, and an annular depending flange resting on said shoulder, means for securing the coverinposition, andaliningfor said cover I having openings registering with those of the cover but of less diameter than the latter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 16th day of November, A. D. 1901.
