REIN SUPPORT AND HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,121, dated April 8, 1902.
Application filed December 30, 1901. Serial No. 87,804. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES S. WAKEFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mangum, in the county of Greer and Territory of klahoma, have invented a new and useful Rein Support and Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a rein-supporting attachment for vehicles, such as buggies, carriages, and others having dashboards, although it may be also applied to vehicles having box-like bodies.
The object of this invention is to support the reins above the horses back and in such position that the animals tail cannot become entangled therewith.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents a front elevation of this improved rein-holder, showing it attached to theinside of a dashboard of a vehicle, a transverse section of the body of the vehicle being shown. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the rein-support, taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 represents a horizontal section of the upper clamping member, showing the guard-rail of the dashboard engaged thereby.
Fig. 4c represents a horizontal section of the lower clamping member and of the dashboard to which it is attached.
The same reference-numerals indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In the form illustrated the body or box 10 of a buggy is provided with the usual dashboard 20, having a guard-rail 21 disposed at the top thereof and having this improved reinholder attached thereto.
This improved rein support and holder com prises a frame 30, preferably constructed of heavy wire and formed by two parallel rods 31 and 32, joined at their lower ends by a transverse rod 33. These rods or wires are bowed outwardly at 34: and then extend up straight and are provided on their upper ends with a loop 35, through which the reins are adapted to pass and be supported therein above the horses tail, so that the animal cannot switch his tail over the reins. This frame 30 may be made in one integral piece and is preferably provided in the lower half thereof with a plate or web 10, adapted to fit or made integral with the wires or rods 31 and 32.
A rein-holder 50 of any suitable construction may be secured to the inner face of said support at a point convenient to the driver. As shown, this holder isin the form of a springclainp comprising a plate 51, having downwardly-extending lugs or cars, as 52, through which the plate 51 is pivoted to the supporting-frame by means of the pin 53, extending therethrough and engaging oppositely-disposed ears 31 and 32 on the rods 31 and 32. A coiled spring 54 is disposed under the rear end of the plate 51 and is connected with the plate or web 40. The plate 51 is provided at its front end with a downwardly-extending portion 55,havingan outwardly and upwardly inclined finger-piece 56.
The frame 30 is adjust-ably secured to the vehicle by two clamping members and 70, preferably disposed one at the top of the dashboard and the other on the inside of the front end of the buggy-box 10. The lower clamp 60 comprisesarectangularkeeper61,provided with attaching-flanges G2 and 63, through which screws 64; and 65 pass and engage the buggy-box 10. A thumb-screw 66 preferably extends through the center of the keeper 61 and engages the plate or Web 40 and binds it tightly against the box of the buggy. The upper clamp 70, as shown, comprises a plate 71, folded upon itself and adapted to embrace the guard-rail 21. The inner face of this plate is bent outwardly at its opposite sides to form recesses 72 and 73 for receiving and engaging the rods 31 and 32 of the frame 30. The plate is provided at its upper bent end with openings 71 and 75, through which the rods 31 and 32 project. A'thumb-screw 76 extends through the middle of the clamp and clamps the front and rear portions of the plate together, thereby firmly securing the frame 30 to the guard-rail 21.
I claim as my invention- 1. A rein-support comprising a frame outwardly bowed at its upper end and provided with a rein-guide, the rear portion of said support being adapted to extend within the dashboard of the vehicle, and a pair of adjustable clamps engaging with the lower and intermediate portions of such frame.
2. A rein-support comprising two parallel bars joined together at their lower ends, a
rein-loop connecting the upper ends of said bars, a rein-holder disposed on said bars, and clamps for attaching said bars to the body of a vehicle.
3. Arein-support comprisingaframe bowed outward at its upper portion and provided with a rein-loop at; its upper end, a clamp adapted to engage the upper part of said frame near its bowed portion and clamp it to 10 a dashboard, and another clamp adapted to engage the lower'end of said frame and fasten it to a vehicle-body.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES S. WAKEFIELD.
