Description

No. $96,659. Paienteai Apr. I, 1902.
m. s. THOMAS.
ADJUSTABLE NUT AND PIPE WRENCH.
(Apialimtion filed July 26, 1901.)
(N0 Modem AUJUSTARLE NUT Al lll Pll ii'. WRENOi-i To VIM l 1/ 71 out if: 711-114, (rm/cw lie it known that 1, him: citizen of the United Hutton, city of Ithaca, in the county r-i. 'l'nonnn, ii osiding :t'r the ot' Toinpkiini and State oi New York, have invented :1 new min useful Quick Jttljunmhle Nut and Pipe Wrench, of which the lolhming is it speciliczi- Lion.
lily invention relates to irnpmvcmcnts in nut and pipe wrenches in, which a. cheaper crmstructed and more useful Wrench. is attoincd. .llerctoforc it has been proposed'to construct wrenches which are regulated to fit different nuts and pipes to which they are applied. by means of a threaded thu n1bscrew or by itchziin, a. slow process. It will be readily seen that these objections are ontirely removed in. myinvention from the fact that it is only necessary to press the handler; or longlever-zirnis of my device together titer attaching to the not or pipe, when the jaws or compound rivet-jointed lovers with milled or slightly-rot:ghenctl edges; will find their own adjustment instantly to nut or pipe of any size or shape, and the jaws will securely retain. their hold or grin Without force being, applied by howl-pressure to hold them tegather, and it is only necessary to push or pull the lever-handles to turn the n'utorpipe after the grip is once secured.
My wrench is much more cheaply manufactured than others, inasmuch as but two dies only are necessary to mnlce any part except the adjustable thumhscrew and rivets, and the entire Wrench may thus he dropd'orged,
The novelty in the present invention resides in the peculiarities 01 construction of the wrench, :n; will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then purtieulnrly pointed out in the claims,
I attain the foregoing objects by the mech :tnism illustrated in the nceompmiyingdrgtw intro, in Which- Figure l. is it vertical iictwisc view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is :1 vertical edgewise view of thesmne \i'howingthc :n'ljustnhlo thumb-st 'cwzit the side near the top; Fig. $3, an enL-irgcd portion elf the lever-joint and thnlnb screw head, which nnty be detached and thrown back by loosening the thunilr screw in, order to attach the wrench to any )i in lttiel :wnin sccurcl nitrltched and locked by the thumb-screw being tightened; Fig. 4;, a vertical cross-section of Fin. 7, shmvingthc manner of the construction olT the rivet or shoulder-bolt to which the jointed detachable lever is locked itlltl the construction oi the countersunk form of the v tnnd inner ed; oi. the hook in the movable lever-arm through which it passes before being locked. Fig. 5 is a shoulder-bolt enlarged, to which the thumb-nut is attached, as shown in Fig. l.
Similarlcttcrsrei'crijosimilzirpnrtsthrough out the several Vl0\-..
In Fig. l is illustrated. the device both closed and opened, the latter condition being indicated by the outline of broken lines. The device consists of the lever PUXHS or handles :0 1 terminating at the points H) and joined together at a with a rimrejoint put together with it shoulder belt or rivet to give stren th. to the joint and prevent binding when riveted or bolted. At the points I and l) are attached the two compound jointed levers l) c and (Z (r, joined at. the points; it and 1! byshonltier-bolts or rivets. The inner jaws between these points are slightly milled or roughened. 'n l ig. 1 show the The broken linen :l 1," o device open to in; lull oxtimt for the reception or introductimi of the pipe, and. the open levor-nrm 11" c', t'crmivntiing in 2t hook, indi cntes the manner of opening the device in order to adjust it to the pipe, after which it in lo ed, as at I], and secured firmly by threaded thumhecrow at of, the hitter being SlitiWtll in Fig. 2.
When the pipe is introduced into the wrench while open, as in. (Z', c, b, :11", and the long; ievor-ztrzns of the wrench tr 'tt't) closed by the hands, if} at n; and the compound jointed levers assu me the position (I 4: l1, firmly gripping the not or pipe and perfectly and quickly adjusting themselves thereto.
Fig, 2; is an enlcr 'cd section oi? the rivet joint, showing the hook end of the adjustable lever-arm (Z c in place after the Wrench hos been attached to the pine.
Vhen the wrench is nnide t'crzt pipe-wrench only, it is not 11(20 3S 1{Ll'l0 manufacture it with the thumb-screw to loci: it; but when used as It pipe and nut wrench it SllOllldiliLYt) the look. I therefore claim the right to mzuaufncture it either way.
I do not wish to be conlincd to my particu lar method in manufacturing the above pipe and nut wrench so long as I do not departv from the general principle thereof. I may conclude to make a link-joint at a in Fig. 1,
so as to cause the wrench to conform and engage without hand-pressure to dented, brnised and uneven surfaces of pipe, and I claim the right to manufacture and sell the Wrench with or without the link-joint.
What I claim in my invention as new, and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A pipe andnut wrench composed of two long compound levers, 00 b c and y d c, with notched jaws joined together at'a and c, with shoulder-bolts, in combination with two short compound levers, 12.0 and do, with notched jaws, joined together with shoulder-bolts, the end of one, d 0, being formed into a countersunk hook with sho older-bolt, in combination with lock-nut, to engage the same, substan, tially as shown in Fig. 1, and described.
2. The pipe and nut wrench described, composed of a combination of the four compound levers w b, b c, 'y d, and (Z 0, having inner short, one of the latter provided with a detachable hook, together with a shoulder-bolt having ashoulder formed to engage a counztersunk hook, in combination with a thumbnutv threaded thereon, to adjust the same, all in combination, and joined together with shoulder-bolts at the points, a, b, c, and d, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I=have signed my name to this specification'in the presence of I two subscribing witnesses.
